Mailmark 4-state

Royal Mail Mailmark 4-state is a 4-state barcode for application within the Royal Mail postal system, for mailers that cannot print the Data Matrix form of Mailmark. It carries the mailing's identifiers and destination postcode with Reed-Solomon error correction.

Uses:

  • UK machine-readable Low Sort and Unsorted letters sorted and tracked by Royal Mail.
  • Manual Mailmark parcels and general large letters.

Standards: Royal Mail Mailmark Barcode Definition Document; Royal Mail Mailmark barcode C and barcode L encoding and decoding instructions.

Data and Options

  • The data field consists of the fixed-length Mailmark fields, including any space padding: 22 characters for barcode C (66 bars) or 26 characters for barcode L (78 bars):
    • Format, 0 to 4.
    • Version ID, 1.
    • Class, 0 to 9 or A to E.
    • Supply Chain ID, two digits for barcode C or six for barcode L.
    • Item ID, eight digits.
    • Destination Post Code plus Delivery Point Suffix, nine characters: a full postcode followed by its two-character Delivery Point Suffix, padded with spaces at the end, or XY11 followed by five spaces for an international destination.
  • Note: Due to the fixed-length field format of the data it is important to carefully preserve spaces in the data field.
