🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winDo not skip the limit check for every 422 response.
If
issues.listForReporejects a valid target with 422, this handler leavesopenempty and proceeds toaddAssignees. GitHub documents 422 for abuse detection as well as validation failure, so a lookup failure can bypass the limit. (docs.github.com) Only skip the count after confirming that the target login is invalid. Otherwise, fail the assignment rather than treating the count as zero.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

/assign now refuses when the person being assigned already holds MAX_ASSIGNED_ISSUES (3) open assigned issues in the repository, and replies with the issues they hold. Issues whose type is listed in EXEMPT_ISSUE_TYPES (Epic, Initiative) do not count, and claiming one is never refused. Both are workflow-level env values so they can be changed in one place. The count matches each issue's assignees against the target rather than trusting the assignee filter alone, which reads "none" as "unassigned", and skips the check only when the filter answers 422 and a user lookup confirms the login does not exist, so the existing "Could not assign" reply still covers it. Any other failure aborts the run rather than counting zero. Runs now share one repo-wide, job-level concurrency group with queue: max, so the count and the assignment cannot interleave with an /assign on another issue, and queued commands are kept rather than replaced. actionlint does not know the queue key yet, so .github/actionlint.yaml ignores that one error for this workflow. Also compare logins case-insensitively after addAssignees: the response carries the canonical casing, so "/assign @user" with different casing assigned the user and then wrongly reported that it could not. Port NVIDIA/nodewright#877. /assign now refuses to assign an issue when the target already holds three open issues in this repo, and lists them. Issues whose native type is Epic or Initiative neither count toward the limit nor are blocked by it. The job runs in a single repo-wide queue (queue: max) so two concurrent claims cannot both pass the count; .github/actionlint.yaml ignores the queue key, which actionlint <= 1.7.12 does not know yet. The docs now key the WIP exemption on the native Epic/Initiative issue types, which this repo already uses, rather than the epic/initiative labels. Signed-off-by: Brian Lockwood <lockwobr@gmail.com>
## Description Lets contributors claim an issue themselves instead of waiting for a maintainer to assign it. Assigning an issue needs triage access, which outside and fork-based contributors don't have, so today a claim is only a comment until someone assigns it by hand. Adds `.github/workflows/assign.yaml`, ported from NVIDIA/nodewright: - `/assign` assigns the commenter, only if the issue has no assignee. Free text after the command on the same line (`/assign I'll take this`) is still a claim by the commenter. - `/assign @user` assigns the named user, only if the issue has no assignee. It must be alone on the first line; a mention mixed with other text, or several mentions, is refused with a reply saying why. - `/unassign` removes the commenter, only if they are assigned; nobody can release someone else's claim. - Only the first line is read as the command, so `cc @maintainer` on a later line never changes who is assigned. The command is matched case-insensitively and must be the first word, so `/assign-foo` does not match. - One owner at a time. Refused commands get an explanatory reply, including when GitHub silently drops a user who can't be assigned. - Issues only, not pull requests. Security: triggers on `issue_comment` (always the base repository's context), never checks out code, `contents: read` at the top level and `issues: write` only on the job, `actions/github-script` pinned by SHA. It runs on a GitHub-hosted `ubuntu-latest` runner (as `scorecard.yaml` does), since any GitHub user can trigger it by commenting, and only in the upstream repository. Assignees are read fresh from the API, and commands are serialized per issue through a job-level concurrency group, so ordinary comments never queue. Two fixes over the nodewright original, both of which nodewright later adopted upstream: - The concurrency group uses `queue: max`. With the default single pending slot, a newer run cancels a pending one and the command is lost. - Usernames are compared case-insensitively, so `/assign @Octocat` isn't reported as a failure when GitHub returns `octocat`. The work-in-progress claim limit nodewright added later (NVIDIA/nodewright#877) is intentionally left out; it is a policy choice for maintainers. Note: actionlint (v1.7.12) doesn't recognize `concurrency.queue` yet and reports it as an unknown key; the key is documented in GitHub's workflow syntax reference. The companion PR #601 adds an actionlint ignore for it. CONTRIBUTING.md now documents `/assign` and `/unassign` where it describes claiming an issue. Closes #598 ## Checklist - [x] I am familiar with the [Contributing Guidelines](./CONTRIBUTING.md). - [ ] New or existing tests cover these changes. - [x] The documentation is up to date with these changes. - [x] All commits are signed off per DCO (`git commit -s`). --------- Signed-off-by: Brian Lockwood <lockwobr@gmail.com>
Description
Closes #876.
/assignnow enforces the issue half of the work-in-progress limit. When the person being assigned already holdsMAX_ASSIGNED_ISSUES(3) open assigned issues in this repository, the bot refuses and replies with the issues they hold. Issues whose type is inEXEMPT_ISSUE_TYPES(Epic, Initiative) do not count, and claiming one is never refused. Both values are workflow-levelenventries at the top of.github/workflows/assign.yaml, so changing the limit or the exempt types is a one-line edit.Details worth a reviewer's attention:
issues.listForReporather than search, because the search index can lag behind a just-made assignment. The REST payload carriestype.name, which is what the exempt-type filter reads.assigneefilter returns 422 for an unknown login and readsnoneas "unassigned". Because 422 also covers other failures (raised by CodeRabbit), the limit check is skipped only when a follow-upusers.getByUsernamereturns 404, and the existing addAssignees path then reports the user it cannot assign, as before. A 422 for a login that exists, or any other error, fails the run rather than counting zero. Each listed issue is matched against the target's login (case-insensitively, like the filter), which neutralizesnone./assign @Userwith different casing assigned the user and then replied "Could not assign".queue: max(raised by CodeRabbit). Per issue, two/assigncomments on different issues could both pass the count; a shared group with the default queue would keep only one pending run and cancel the one it replaces, silently dropping a command.queue: maxkeeps up to 100 pending runs in FIFO order. Job-level so only command comments queue. Sidebar assignment by someone with write access still bypasses the bot, as CONTRIBUTING.md says..github/actionlint.yamldid not exist. actionlint (CI pins 1.7.11, latest is 1.7.12) rejects the documentedconcurrency.queuekey (concurrency: Add support forqueuekey rhysd/actionlint#654, unreleased), so the file ignores exactly that error forassign.yamland nothing else. The actionlint workflow's path filters already list this file, and CI's actionlint discovers it automatically. It should be removed once a pinned actionlint release knowsqueue.CONTRIBUTING.md is updated in both places that describe the refusal.
How this was verified
actionlint -shellcheck=over all workflows, exactly as CI runs it: clean (it fails onqueuewithout the new config).node --checkon the embeddedgithub-scriptbody: clean.gh apicalls against this repo to confirm the API behavior the script relies on:type.nameonlistForRepoandissues.getitems, the case-insensitiveassigneefilter, 422 for an unknown login, andassignee=nonereturning unassigned items.issue_commentagainst the default branch, so it can only be exercised after merge. No Go code changed, so no make targets apply.AI assistance: Claude Code wrote the change and ran a self-review pass with review-composer; I reviewed every line.
