- Around line 445-446: Update writeCertAndKey, used by the webhook certificate
rotation path, to prevent a failed write from leaving tls.crt and tls.key
mismatched. Write both files atomically or restore their previous contents if
either write fails, so the webhook server never observes a partial update.

Two blocking issues inline, a reply on CodeRabbit's mismatched-pair thread, and a design question that applies to #860 as well.
question: Why does CheckOrUpdateWebhookCertSecret treat disk != Secret as a reason to mint a new cert? SecretCertWatcher already syncs the Secret to disk on every pod, the leader included, and both came in together in 997282f with no stated reason for the comparison. If reconcile wrote only the Secret and minted only on expiry or a SAN mismatch, the watcher would be the only disk writer (the second fix #790 itself suggests). Then there is no global lock, no remint from a half-renamed pair, no #791 loop, and one pod's disk can no longer block a cluster-wide rotation. If the comparison catches a case a watcher sync would not, it would be worth naming in a comment.

Handle temporary-file close errors.
The writable-handle rule applies here. Capture tmp.Close() errors on the write, chmod, and sync failure paths. Joining the close error with the primary error reports both while preserving errors. Is matching.

@mohityadav8 #860 and #861 fix the same root cause, so let's keep the discussion in one place. Please close this PR and make the fix in #860, adding The fix is the change lockwobr asked for on #860: make For reference, 66faae5 doesn't get there. It reverts |
Summary
Propagate the error from
writeCertAndKeyinGetOrCreateWebhookCertSecretandCheckOrUpdateWebhookCertSecretinstead of discarding it with_ =.Problem
If the disk write started failing after startup (for example a full disk), the Secret was still created/updated. The next reconcile then saw disk != Secret in
compareCertOnDiskToSecret, minted a new cert and updated the Secret again, repeating for as long as the write kept failing.Fix
The disk write now happens before the Secret is created or updated, and its error is returned. On the rotation path the Secret is left untouched and reconcile backs off through controller-runtime's normal error handling.
Behavior change
GetOrCreateWebhookCertSecretis also called fromStart(), so a failed disk write on the create path now fails startup. This matchesensureDummyCert, which already returns its error at startup.Testing
CheckOrUpdateWebhookCertSecretreturns an error and leaves the Secret unchanged when the disk write fails. The write is forced to fail by makingtls.keya directory, so it also fails when tests run as root.make unit-testspasses.Fixes #791
