Precompute the candidate payloads before the reader loop.
isWholeFile calls pair for each candidate on every read. Each call allocates a large byte slice. The reader runs continuously while writers sync 640 files, so these allocations add avoidable CPU and memory pressure to the test. Build the eight cert and key payloads once, then compare reads against those cached slices.

The per-file temp-and-rename and the lock look right for what they target. Two gaps from #790 remain, and a design question that would close both.
- The lock covers the writes, not the reads or the decision to write.
compareCertOnDiskToSecretreadstls.crt, thentls.key, outsidecertWriteMu. Between the two renames, reconcile on the leader can read the Secret's new cert next to the old key, decide disk != Secret and mint a fresh CA inCheckOrUpdateWebhookCertSecret, which rotates every pod's serving cert and the caBundle for nothing.syncSecretToDiskalso compares outside the lock, so it can write back a Secret it read before reconcile'sUpdateover the cert reconcile just wrote. - A failure between the two renames still leaves a mismatched pair.
tls.crtis renamed into place beforetls.keyis written, so a failed key write leaves the new cert next to the old key. Writing both temp files before renaming either narrows that to a failed rename; closing it fully needs a rollback or a single swap, such as the directory symlink the kubelet's atomic writer uses.
question: Why does CheckOrUpdateWebhookCertSecret treat disk != Secret as a reason to mint a new cert? SecretCertWatcher already syncs the Secret to disk on every pod, the leader included, and both came in together in 997282f with no stated reason for the comparison. If reconcile wrote only the Secret and minted only on expiry or a SAN mismatch, the watcher would be the only disk writer (the second fix #790 itself suggests). Then there is no global lock, no remint from a half-renamed pair, no #791 loop, and one pod's disk can no longer block a cluster-wide rotation. If the comparison catches a case a watcher sync would not, it would be worth naming in a comment.
Sounds good, I understand, and agree. Just please make sure your double checking AI work, and you understanding the work that AI is doing for you. |

Needs changes: 1 blocking (Make SecretCertWatcher the only disk writer, as a small c...).

issue (blocking): Make SecretCertWatcher the only disk writer, as a small controller that retries, instead of serializing two writers with a package-level mutex.
certWriteMu exists only because WebhookController (webhook_controller.go:390, :440) and SecretCertWatcher (cert_watcher.go:112, :120) both write certDir, and its comments already misstate the writer list (ensureDummyCert at cert_utils.go:239 is a third). Separately, a failed write in the watcher's informer handler is only logged (cert_watcher.go:72-85) and not retried until the next Secret event or the 10h cache resync; since every rotation mints a new CA that goes straight into the caBundle (webhook_controller.go:443, :461-468), that replica keeps serving a cert the API server no longer trusts. The leader is covered only by accident: the !equal disk check in CheckOrUpdateWebhookCertSecret remints on the next reconcile.
In this PR: (1) turn SecretCertWatcher into a controller-runtime controller for that one Secret with WithOptions(controller.Options{NeedLeaderElection: ptr(false)}), so it still runs on every pod and a failed write returns an error and requeues with backoff; (2) drop the writeCertAndKey calls at webhook_controller.go:390 and :440 so the leader only mints and stores the Secret; (3) drop the !equal disk comparison from the remint condition in CheckOrUpdateWebhookCertSecret (webhook_controller.go:411-436), or the reconcile triggered by the leader's own Secret update can see the old disk and remint in a loop; (4) drop certWriteMu and its comments, keeping writeFileAtomic. WebhookSecretReadyzCheck (webhook_controller.go:818) keeps its disk comparison as the per-pod gate. This removes the two writes #861 makes fatal.

Closes #790
Closes #791
What
WebhookController(leader) andSecretCertWatcherboth wrotecertDir,creating concurrent disk writers that caused a mismatched cert/key pair on
disk (#790) and an infinite remint loop (#791).
Fix
SecretCertWatcherthe sole disk writer by converting it from aninformer-based
Runnableto a controller-runtime controller withNeedLeaderElection: false. Failed writes now return an error socontroller-runtime requeues with automatic backoff.
writeCertAndKeycalls inWebhookController. The leader onlymints/rotates certs and updates the Secret.
!equaldisk comparison from the remint condition. With noleader disk write, disk ≠ Secret on a fresh pod caused an infinite loop.
certWriteMu— single writer means no race. KeepwriteFileAtomic.mgr.Add()inmain.gowithSetupWithManager().Tests
Updated
cert_watcher_test.go: removedcachearg from constructor,replaced
syncSecretToDiskcalls withReconcile.Verification
go build ./...fromoperator/— passes clean.
