The plugin has no SwiftData macros, so apps that use them can't build. This adds them.
@Model adds stored data, schema data, observation, and model conformances. @Attribute, @Relationship, and @Transient handle model fields. #Unique and #Index add schema data, no code. @ModelActor adds a model executor and container. @Query adds a backing field and accessor. I also added helper macros _PersistedProperty and _TransformablePersistedProperty.
I registered the target, updated the generated macro list, and added 29 SwiftData fixtures covering models, fields, queries, actors, schema data, and errors.
The package has no Linux test target. Its test script runs only on macOS and compares output with Apple's compiler. The build runs on Linux. Builds on Swift 6.4, x86_64 Linux:
That's a fresh debug build, a fresh static musl release build, and make umbrella-check, in that order.
SwiftPM printed this cache warning before fetching swift-syntax:
warning: 'swift-syntax': skipping cache due to an error:
That's a package cache warning, not a compiler warning. Both builds fetched the package and passed. The 29 tests didn't run on Xcode 27. The build passed on Linux.
The 29 test files compare our macro output with the compiler's output. I found no RE output in the branch commit notes or changed SwiftData files. I can attest to this rebase and target update. I can't attest to the earlier commits.
SwiftData macros only. Foundation and preview macros aren't included.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added SwiftData support for model declarations, persisted and transformable properties, relationships, indexes, uniqueness constraints, model actors, and queries.
Models can define default values, optional and transient properties, computed values, and observation-aware access.
Added diagnostics for unsupported model declarations and invalid property configurations.
Documentation
Updated SwiftData’s support status and macro reference.
Tests
Added integration coverage for model, relationship, indexing, uniqueness, actor, and query configurations.
Provenance of the earlier commits
The macro bodies in this branch date back to 2026-10-03, before the rebase. This note covers those commits. I have two sources for this: the commit history of this branch, and the private build log written while the work happened.
What the record shows:
The work started from a real build failure. IceCubesApp stopped at @Model with the error external macro implementation type 'SwiftDataMacros.PersistentModelMacro' could not be found. That's filed upstream as xtool#149. The goal was to make public SwiftData model code compile. It wasn't to study a binary.
The check was Apple's published macro expansion. The branch's IntegrationTests harness diffs our expansion against Xcode 27 output from swiftc -dump-macro-expansions. The build log records 102 of 102 passing at authoring time. A later run of ten probes shows the @Model and @Query expansions identical to Xcode 27's.
Each commit message describes syntax and schema level work. Topics are fixtures, diagnostics, schemaMetadata entries, and blank line assembly. No message names disassembly, a dylib, an offset, or a reverse-engineering tool.
A marker search covered every changed non-fixture source. It looked for Hopper, disassembly, decompile, dylib, offsets of 8 or more hex digits, mangled SwiftData symbols, and objc_msgSend. It found nothing.
What the record cannot show:
Whether a reverse-engineering sub-agent ran at some point in the 2026-10-03 session. The build log has no tool inventory for that session. I mark this unknown. I don't claim it never happened. Nothing in the log is labeled as reverse-engineering output. No commit introduces code traced to one.
Which reference documents the author had open for each commit. The record shows the validation method. It doesn't log each read.
Upstream removed the empty SwiftDataMacros stub and moved the macro
umbrella into OpenAppleMacrosKit. Re-add the target with the SwiftDiagnostics
dependency the implementation actually needs, and regenerate the umbrella.
Also drop the unused Foundation import and switch to the non-deprecated
swift-syntax API so the build is warning-free on upstream main.
The change adds a SwiftData macro target with expansions for persistent properties, models, queries, and model actors. It adds integration examples for model declarations and macro options, and updates the README’s SwiftData support listing.

Persist stored properties that declare property observers
For a model field such as var count: Int = 0 { didSet {} }, accessorBlock is non-nil even though the property is stored. This check, together with the equivalent check in isPersistedProperty, excludes it from both schemaMetadata and persistence-accessor generation. The resulting model builds, but changes to this field never enter the backing data, and the generated init(backingData:) resets it to its default. Distinguish observer-only blocks from computed getters/setters in both property collection and accessor generation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Stored properties with only willSet or didSet observers are now persisted and receive persistence accessors. A shared helper covers all three property checks. Commit dc03bab adds the Model-observers.swift fixture. The macOS differential fixtures have not run yet.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Recognize module-qualified Transient attributes
When a model uses @SwiftData.Transient var cache: Int = 0, this comparison returns false. Consequently, persistedProperties includes cache in the schema and isPersistedProperty attaches @_PersistedProperty, causing an explicitly transient value to be written to and restored from persistent backing data. Recognize SwiftData.Transient alongside Transient, including in the transient-default diagnostic check, and add a qualified-spelling fixture.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The transient checks now accept the SwiftData.Transient spelling, including the missing-default diagnostic. Commit dc03bab adds Transient-qualified.swift. The macOS differential fixtures have not run yet.
Query-public.swift uses an internal view and property. A visibility-specific regression in the generated backing property would go undetected. Add a public model and a public view with a public @Query property, then compare its expansion with Apple’s.

Schema generation copies each initializer expression into defaultValue without preserving its property's declared type. Context-dependent expressions such as .now, .init(), or an enum shorthand may lose the context needed to typecheck.
Generated schemaMetadata may fail to compile even though the original property initializer is well typed.
This can occur when: A model declares a typed default such as var createdAt: Date = .now or var id: UUID = .init().

Update initializer handling in PersistentModelMacro schema generation so each

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The updated support documentation describes Index and Unique as attached macros using @Index and @Unique, while the supplied implementations and fixtures define freestanding declaration macros invoked with #Index and #Unique.
The documented invocation spelling is misleading and can lead to code that does not compile.
This can occur when: A reader follows the newly supported macro table to write an index or uniqueness declaration.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Transient detection recognizes only the unqualified spelling Transient. A property annotated @SwiftData.Transient therefore passes persisted-property selection and receives persistence metadata and accessors.
A field explicitly excluded from persistence may be stored and restored from the database.
This can occur when: A model uses @SwiftData.Transient var cache: String = "".
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Generated witness visibility is elevated only for declarations explicitly marked public. An open model therefore receives internal schemaMetadata and init(backingData:), despite being externally visible.
The generated PersistentModel conformance may fail witness-accessibility checking.
This can occur when: Apply @Model to an open class with an explicit initializer.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Stored-property selection treats every accessor block as computed. Stored properties with willSet or didSet observers are consequently omitted from schemaMetadata; isPersistedProperty and persistedVariable also reject them.
If observer-bearing stored properties are supported, changes to count will not be persisted or restored.
This can occur when: A model declares an observed stored property, for example var count: Int = 0 { didSet { ... } }.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Model property collection examines only direct variable members and does not traverse conditional-compilation declarations. extraSchemaProperties similarly examines only direct macro-expansion members.
The active field or uniqueness constraint may be missing from schemaMetadata; a separately attached persisted-property helper could also reference backing storage omitted from init(backingData:).
This can occur when: A model places an active stored property or #Unique declaration inside #if DEBUG or another conditional-compilation block.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Model member-attribute expansion unconditionally adds @_PersistedProperty to eligible stored properties, including properties already annotated @_TransformablePersistedProperty or @_PersistedProperty. Both helpers generate accessors and the same backing peer.
The compiler may receive conflicting ordinary and transformable accessors or duplicate _payload declarations, preventing the model from compiling.
This can occur when: Expand WithTransformable from Transformable-basic.swift, whose payload already carries @_TransformablePersistedProperty.

Make the generated protocol witnesses public for public actors.
For @ModelActor public actor Store, the generated modelExecutor and modelContainer are internal. They cannot satisfy the public ModelActor conformance, so compilation fails. Generate public witnesses for public actors and add a public-actor fixture.

This is related to #10, since both add SwiftData macros.
#10 (draft, two commits, 23 files) covers @Model, @Attribute, and basic @Relationship and @Transient. This PR covers those same four, plus #Unique, #Index, @ModelActor and @Query, so it's the larger slice (36 files).
They're not separate slices. Both create the SwiftDataMacros target, and a trial merge of the two heads conflicts in five files: Macros.swift, PersistedPropertyMacro.swift, PersistentModelMacro.swift, README.md and the Model-basic.swift fixture. Package.swift and Generated/All.swift merge cleanly. Only one of the two can land as it is.
I'm happy with either order. If #10 lands first, I'll rebase this PR onto it and leave only what #10 doesn't cover (@Query, @ModelActor, #Unique, #Index). If you'd rather take this one first, #10's author can rebase on it. @kabiroberai, tell me which you prefer and I'll do the rebase within a day.
Persist stored properties that have only willSet or didSet observers.
Recognize the SwiftData.Transient spelling. Accept the generic Optional
spelling in the transient default diagnostic. Generate valid backing
names for escaped identifiers. Give the ModelActor witnesses the same
access level as a public actor.
Add fixtures for observers, qualified transient attributes and public
model actors. Only swift build on Linux was run. The differential
fixtures have not been run on macOS, so Apple's output may still differ.

Preserve observers on the generated backing property.
persistedVariable admits observer-only properties, and accessors converts them to computed properties. Copy the original willSet and didSet clauses to the generated backing property, as SwiftData's observation transformation does. Otherwise, model properties such as WithObservers.count can compile while silently losing their observer behavior.

The plugin has no SwiftData macros, so apps that use them can't build. This adds them.
@Modeladds stored data, schema data, observation, and model conformances.@Attribute,@Relationship, and@Transienthandle model fields.#Uniqueand#Indexadd schema data, no code.@ModelActoradds a model executor and container.@Queryadds a backing field and accessor. I also added helper macros_PersistedPropertyand_TransformablePersistedProperty.I registered the target, updated the generated macro list, and added 29 SwiftData fixtures covering models, fields, queries, actors, schema data, and errors.
The package has no Linux test target. Its test script runs only on macOS and compares output with Apple's compiler. The build runs on Linux. Builds on Swift 6.4, x86_64 Linux:
That's a fresh debug build, a fresh static musl release build, and
make umbrella-check, in that order.SwiftPM printed this cache warning before fetching swift-syntax:
That's a package cache warning, not a compiler warning. Both builds fetched the package and passed. The 29 tests didn't run on Xcode 27. The build passed on Linux.
The 29 test files compare our macro output with the compiler's output. I found no RE output in the branch commit notes or changed SwiftData files. I can attest to this rebase and target update. I can't attest to the earlier commits.
SwiftData macros only. Foundation and preview macros aren't included.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Provenance of the earlier commits
The macro bodies in this branch date back to 2026-10-03, before the rebase. This note covers those commits. I have two sources for this: the commit history of this branch, and the private build log written while the work happened.
What the record shows:
@Modelwith the errorexternal macro implementation type 'SwiftDataMacros.PersistentModelMacro' could not be found. That's filed upstream as xtool#149. The goal was to make public SwiftData model code compile. It wasn't to study a binary.IntegrationTestsharness diffs our expansion against Xcode 27 output fromswiftc -dump-macro-expansions. The build log records 102 of 102 passing at authoring time. A later run of ten probes shows the@Modeland@Queryexpansions identical to Xcode 27's.schemaMetadataentries, and blank line assembly. No message names disassembly, a dylib, an offset, or a reverse-engineering tool. What the record cannot show:
