Problem

Case update emails with a large recipient list failed with 554 Transaction failed: Recipient count exceeds 50. The SMTP relay (Amazon SES) allows at most 50 recipients per message across To, Cc and Bcc, and counts the addresses in the headers as well as the envelope. The service sent everything as one message, so the whole send failed.

Change

  • SendEmail now splits recipients (To, then Cc, then Bcc, de-duplicated) into separate messages of at most 50, each with its own To/Cc headers, all sent over one SMTP connection.
  • Each recipient gets exactly one copy, but only sees the other recipients of their own message. Bcc addresses never appear in headers.
  • A failed batch no longer stops the rest; all failures are returned together (recipient batch N: ...).
  • Requests with no recipients still fail instead of succeeding silently.
  • Up to 50 recipients behaves as before: one message.
  • README documents the behaviour.

Testing

  • go vet and go test -race ./... pass, including the existing handler and MIME tests.
  • New tests use an in-process fake SMTP server: batch sizes (120 recipients gives 50/50/20), single delivery per recipient, de-duplication, no recipients, per-batch headers, Bcc not in headers, and relay rejection above 50.
  • Manual: with a staging sender, a 60-recipient request (all plus-addresses of one mailbox) returned 200 and was sent as two messages; before the change the same shape failed with the 554.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Emails with more than 50 unique recipients are sent in batches of up to 50. Recipients are deduplicated across To, CC, and BCC, with the first-listed role preserved.
    • Each recipient receives one copy and sees only recipients included in their message. If a batch fails, sending continues for the remaining batches; the request returns an error if any batch fails.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the email endpoint documentation to describe recipient batching and partial failures.

The SMTP relay rejects any message with more than 50 recipients across
To, Cc and Bcc (counting header addresses), failing the whole send with
a 554. Split the recipients into separate messages of at most 50, each
with its own To/Cc headers, de-duplicating addresses. A failed batch no
longer stops the others.

Walkthrough

The SMTP client now deduplicates recipients and sends messages in batches of up to 50. It continues sending after a batch failure and returns joined errors. Tests and documentation describe batching and delivery behavior.

The client extracts bare addresses, deduplicates recipients across To, CC, and BCC in that order, and creates message copies with no more than 50 recipients. Tests cover batch sizes, deduplication, empty recipients, and per-batch headers.

SendEmail sends each batch over SMTP. After a failed transaction, it resets the session and continues with remaining batches, then returns joined errors. Tests cover successful and rejected transactions. The README describes recipient visibility and failure handling.

Sending to many recipients with a large attachment can hold many copies of that attachment in memory at once. This can strain the email service under load. The batching behavior itself looks sound. Building each batch's message at send time before merging would remove the memory growth.

Holding every batch's MIME encoding at once multiplied a large
attachment's memory by the number of batches.
