Changes

chore

  • raise typed errors instead of logging and returning none
  • harden model hooks, bool parsing and docs after an audit
  • privatize client internals and freeze the endpoint table
  • fix audit findings in hooks, json parsing and docs

What this does

Breaking change to the error contract, plus hardening from a full tech-debt and docs audit:

  • Invalid parameters and an unsupported lang raise ValueError instead of returning None or silently falling back to English.
  • Empty, unparseable and model-mismatched responses raise the new InvalidResponseError, which carries the HTTP status in status. A None return now only means HTTP 304, data not modified.
  • New request_timeout constructor parameter, 30 seconds by default, enforced per attempt with asyncio.timeout.
  • The rate limiter measures elapsed time with time.monotonic.
  • Deserialization hooks honor their field defaults, _str_to_bool rejects anything but "0" and "1", a NullHandler keeps the library silent in host applications, and a closed client creates a fresh owned session on reuse.
  • The endpoint table, token buckets, lock and ETag cache moved to module level or became private.
  • alerts became a keyword-only parameter on get_liveboard and get_vehicle.
  • The library now lints with the full ruff rule set (ALL).
  • The client class is IRail (PascalCase, was iRail).
  • get_liveboard takes station_id and get_vehicle/get_composition take vehicle_id instead of id. The query parameter sent to the API is unchanged.
  • The unused pytest-mock dependency is dropped.

The offline suite passes with 68 tests at 97 percent branch coverage.

Stacks on #214: until that PR merges, the diff below includes its commits. Suggest reviewing and merging #214 first.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Renamed the public client to IRail.
    • Added InvalidResponseError for unusable API responses.
    • Added configurable request timeouts and improved retry handling.
    • Added clearer validation for languages, dates, times, parameters, and endpoint values.
    • Added support for station_id and vehicle_id identifiers.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of incomplete or missing API response data.
    • Added safer session cleanup and conditional response caching.
    • Invalid responses and malformed requests now raise specific errors.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded guidance on errors, retries, timeouts, liveboard behavior, testing, and logging.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request renames the public client to IRail, adds request validation and response errors, and updates parsing defaults and retry behavior. It also revises live-test failure classification, tests, documentation, and project configuration.

Changes: Client and response handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Public client and exception contract
pyrail/__init__.py, pyrail/exceptions.py, pyrail/irail.py, README.md, tests/test_irail.py
The package exports IRail and InvalidResponseError. Client identifiers and exception signatures change, and examples use the renamed client.
Client setup and request validation
pyrail/irail.py, tests/test_irail.py, README.md
The client validates language, timeout, date, time, and endpoint parameters. It tracks private rate-limit and ETag state and updates session closure behavior.
Response model defaults
pyrail/models.py, tests/test_irail.py
Deserialization hooks handle absent or malformed wrappers with model-specific defaults. Boolean parsing raises ValueError for unsupported values.
HTTP responses, retries, and endpoint parsing
pyrail/irail.py, tests/test_irail.py, README.md
HTTP attempts use request timeouts and retry handling. Invalid responses raise InvalidResponseError, and endpoint methods parse payloads through _parse_response.
Live API failure classification
tests/live/*, tests/test_live_api_helper.py, README.md
The live-test helper distinguishes rejected requests, unusable responses, and retryable errors. Live fixtures and smoke tests use IRail and station_id.
Documentation and project configuration
.github/dependabot.yml, .github/workflows/*, pyproject.toml, README.md
The README adds coverage and logging details. Dependency and workflow comments are removed, and Ruff rules and test dependencies change.

Date and time validation lets malformed short values through to the API instead of raising ValueError. The impact is narrow and easy to fix, so the change is mergeable with a small follow-up.

A rabbit checked the railway line,
And found the client name crisp and fine.
New errors tell what responses miss,
While safer models parse what’s amiss.
The bunny hops through tests in time,
Then nibbles docs, content with rhyme.

Update the docstring to the renamed parameter.

The get_liveboard docstring still says "Provide exactly one of 'station' or 'id'". The public parameter is now station_id. A caller who follows this text and passes id= gets a TypeError.

- Provide exactly one of 'station' or 'id'.
+ Provide exactly one of 'station' or 'station_id'.

- Line 307: Update the date and time validation methods around the visible
strptime calls to reject values unless they contain exactly six and four digits
respectively before parsing. Preserve the existing ValueError handling and API
rejection behavior, and apply the same checks to both date and time validation
paths.

Review comments at @pyrail/models.py:
- Line 168: Update the dictionary-flattening hooks in the affected model
methods, including the hook assigning d["departures"], to work on and return a
shallow copy of the input dictionary rather than mutating it; apply the same
copy-before-overwrite behavior to the corresponding arrivals and other
wrapper-flattening hooks so repeated parsing preserves the original wrapper data
and yields the same fields.

- Line 3: Update the README’s service references to use “iRail” rather than
“IRail” in the description and transient-error guidance, while preserving
“IRail” for the class name.
