Summary

Fixes the critical authentication bypass reported in GHSA-6jh7-q9mf-9p28.

verify_wallet_signature() at main.py:728 returned True unconditionally for any input. Any caller could obtain a valid JWT for any wallet address by supplying a garbage string as the signature.

Root cause

# BEFORE — main.py:728 (the stub)
def verify_wallet_signature(address, signature, timestamp):
    # For now, return True. In production, implement proper signature verification
    return True # ← always, no matter what

A correct implementation already existed in wallet_service.py but was never wired to this route.

Fix

Replaced the stub with real EIP-191 ecrecover verification — the same approach already used by POST /api/auth/verify (routes/auth.py:108-119):

from eth_account.messages import encode_defunct
from web3 import Web3
msg_hash = encode_defunct(text=message)
recovered = Web3().eth.account.recover_message(msg_hash, signature=signature)
if recovered.lower() != address.lower():
    return jsonify({"error": "Invalid signature"}), 401

The stub verify_wallet_signature() function is removed entirely.

Breaking change

The request body now requires a message field — the original plaintext the wallet signed. Clients already using the nonce flow (POST /api/auth/nonce) have this value. The frontend MetaMask integration must forward it alongside address and signature.

Test results

Case Before fix After fix
Garbage signature A HTTP 200 + valid JWT HTTP 401
Garbage signature B (different garbage) HTTP 200 + same user_id HTTP 401
Missing message field HTTP 200 HTTP 400
Empty body HTTP 400 HTTP 400
Valid real signature (ecrecover) HTTP 200 HTTP 200

Resolves: GHSA-6jh7-q9mf-9p28

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Wallet login now verifies that the signed message was produced by the claimed wallet address. Invalid signatures and signatures from a different address are rejected.
    • Login requests must include the original signed message, along with the address and signature. Requests missing required information are rejected.

…er (GHSA-6jh7-q9mf-9p28)

The stub at main.py:728 returned True unconditionally for any input,
allowing any caller to obtain a valid JWT for any wallet address with
a garbage signature string.

Fix: wallet_login now requires the original signed message in the request
body and performs real EIP-191 signature verification:
  1. encode_defunct(text=message) — builds the personal_sign hash
  2. Web3().eth.account.recover_message(msg_hash, signature=signature)
     — recovers the signer address via ecrecover
  3. recovered.lower() != address.lower() → HTTP 401

This is the same verification logic already used by POST /api/auth/verify
(routes/auth.py:108-119). The stub verify_wallet_signature() function is
removed entirely.

Breaking change: callers must now pass a `message` field (the original
plaintext signed by the wallet). Clients using the nonce flow from
POST /api/auth/nonce already have this message; the frontend MetaMask
integration needs to forward it alongside address and signature.

Tested:
- empty body → 400
- missing message → 400
- garbage signature A → 401 (was 200 before fix)
- garbage signature B → 401 (was 200 before fix)

wallet_login now requires an address, signature, and original signed message. It verifies the signer before continuing with user lookup or creation and returning a JWT. A new test script checks missing fields, invalid signatures, and valid or mismatched signed messages.

This change fixes the critical signature-verification bypass, so a garbage signature can no longer obtain a login token. The login flow still does not tie the signed message to a one-time, expiring server nonce, so a captured signed login can be reused. Resolve or explicitly accept the replay gap before merging. Also fix the whitespace stripping of the signed message and the 500 responses on malformed input.

Assert the identity fields in the success test.

The valid-signature test checks only HTTP 200 and that a token exists. It does not check which wallet the response and JWT belong to. A regression that issues a token for the wrong or an empty wallet_address or user_id would still pass. Assert that body["user"]["wallet_address"] == real_address. Decode the token with flask_jwt_extended.decode_token inside app.app_context(). Assert that its sub equals body["user"]["user_id"]. Also assert that mock_db.users.insert_one was called with wallet_address == real_address.

Based on learnings: tests of token minting should assert the fields that determine the resulting identity, not only adjacent metadata.

Validate JSON shape and field types. A non-string value currently returns 500 instead of 400.

If address or signature is a non-string value such as a number, list, or object, .strip() raises AttributeError. A top-level JSON array makes data.get raise. A request without a JSON content type makes request.json raise UnsupportedMediaType. The outer except Exception catches all of these and returns 500 "Authentication failed". These are client errors and should return 400.

Do not strip message. Stripping changes the signed bytes.

personal_sign signs the exact text. If the signed message has leading or trailing whitespace, for example a trailing newline, strip() changes the EIP-191 hash. Recovery then returns a different address, and a valid login fails with 401. Use the message as received. Only check that it is non-empty.

Add freshness and nonce binding to wallet login.

wallet_login checks only that message was signed by address. It does not require a message from /api/auth/nonce, validate its nonce or timestamp, or consume the nonce. A captured valid tuple can therefore be replayed to obtain another JWT, and any text signed by the wallet can be submitted as a login message.

Persist each issued nonce with its wallet address and expiry. Accept only the matching, unexpired message, then consume the nonce atomically after successful verification.
