Summary

Fixes the authentication bypass reported in GHSA-fhwv-x9rc-w3qw and also closes the structurally identical issue in GHSA-p7p9-jc8p-p38m.

Both verify_wallet_authentication() (dashboard.py:70) and resolve_user_identity() (activity_logger.py:50) fell back to trusting caller-supplied X-Wallet-Address, X-User-ID, query params and JSON body fields as a verified identity whenever a valid JWT was absent or failed. Wallet addresses are public on-chain data and prove nothing about who sent the request.

Root cause

# BEFORE — lines 70-81 in dashboard.py (the vulnerable fallback)
wallet_address = (
    request.headers.get('X-Wallet-Address') or  # ← caller-controlled
    request.headers.get('X-User-ID') or          # ← caller-controlled
    request.args.get('wallet_address') or         # ← caller-controlled
    (request.json.get('wallet_address') ...)      # ← caller-controlled
)
if wallet_address:
    return user_id, wallet_address # no proof of ownership

Fix

Both helpers now derive identity exclusively from a verified JWT payload. No fallback to caller-supplied headers, query params or request body.

  • verify_wallet_authentication(): returns (None, None) immediately if no Bearer token is present or if JWT verification fails — the existing if not user_id gate in every caller then returns HTTP 401.
  • resolve_user_identity(): reads user_id, wallet_address and email only from the decoded JWT payload — unauthenticated header/query/body sources removed.

Affected endpoints

File Endpoint Impact before fix

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Authentication now uses identity information from a verified Bearer token. Identity values supplied through request headers, query parameters, or request bodies are no longer accepted as authentication credentials.
    • Requests without a valid token or a recognized identity claim are rejected. Existing wallet address handling and email-based account lookup remain available.

…pers (GHSA-fhwv-x9rc-w3qw, GHSA-p7p9-jc8p-p38m)

verify_wallet_authentication() (dashboard.py) and resolve_user_identity()
(activity_logger.py) both fell back to trusting caller-supplied headers
(X-Wallet-Address, X-User-ID), query params and JSON body fields as a
verified identity whenever no valid JWT was present. Wallet addresses are
public on-chain data and prove nothing about who sent the request.

Fix: both helpers now derive identity exclusively from a server-verified
JWT payload. Any request without a valid Bearer token returns (None, None)
/ empty identity, causing the existing `if not user_id` gates in every
caller to return HTTP 401 as intended.

Affected endpoints (dashboard.py):
  GET  /api/dashboard/comprehensive-stats
  GET  /api/dashboard/recent-activity
  POST /api/dashboard/set-username
  POST /api/dashboard/update-profile

Affected endpoints (activity_logger.py -> courses.py):
  POST /api/courses/<course_id>/lessons/<lesson_id>/complete

Walkthrough

Dashboard authentication and activity identity resolution now use verified JWT claims. Caller-supplied identity values in headers, query parameters, and request bodies no longer serve as fallbacks.

Changes: JWT-Based Identity Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Verified JWT identity
backend/routes/dashboard.py, backend/activity_logger.py
Dashboard authentication now requires a valid Bearer JWT and a usable identity claim. Activity identity fields now come only from the verified JWT payload. The existing wallet canonicalization and email-based database lookup remain.

Update the stale debug_hint in the 401 response.

The hint tells clients they can authenticate with the X-Wallet-Address header. This PR removes that fallback, so the header is always rejected. Change the hint to name only the Bearer JWT.

Use the same JWT secret sources in resolve_user_identity.

_decode_token_verified checks only the jwt_secret argument and JWT_SECRET_KEY. The dashboard check also reads JWT_SECRET, and backend/routes/auth.py signs tokens with JWT_SECRET_KEY or JWT_SECRET. If a deployment sets only JWT_SECRET, the dashboard can accept a token that resolve_user_identity rejects. That function then returns no user_id. Routes that gate on the identity, such as the lesson-complete route, treat the user as unauthenticated. Routes that do not gate on it, such as the coding route, log None. The previous header and body fallbacks could hide this mismatch.

Suggested fix
-        secret = os.getenv('JWT_SECRET_KEY')
+        secret = os.getenv('JWT_SECRET_KEY') or os.getenv('JWT_SECRET')

This matches the environment lookup order in auth.py. A deployment that sets the key only in the Flask app config is still not covered. A single shared verification helper for both modules would cover that case.

Require exp in every JWT decode.

PyJWT 2.14.0 does not require exp unless configured. A validly signed token without exp can pass either dashboard verification path or _decode_token_verified and remain accepted without expiration. The repository issuers currently add exp, but the verification boundary must enforce the claim.
