Each server now has real users and channels numbers, and the daily crawl keeps them current for every server.

Before:

{ "description": "323 users, 233 channels on average (via netsplit.de)." }

After:

{ "description": "", "users": 323, "channels": 233 }

The crawl already logs in to each server, so it reads the counts from the server's own LUSERS reply in the same connection. Servers it can't reach keep their last numbers. The 175 entries imported from netsplit.de now have an empty description, and the crawl report shows the counts per server.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Server listings now include user and channel counts as separate numeric details, collected during the daily server check.
    • User totals use the global count when available; otherwise, they’re calculated from visible and invisible user counts. If no channel count is reported after connection, it’s recorded as zero when a user count is available.
    • Daily synchronization descriptions now cover server capabilities, user counts, and icon updates.

📝 Walkthrough

The crawl now reads user and channel counts from IRC registration replies, carries them through probe results, and stores them as separate numeric fields in servers.json. Crawl reports display both counts, and contributor and workflow text describes their synchronization.

Changes: Network Count Collection and Sync

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse IRC registration counts
scripts/probe.py
Negotiator collects user and channel counts from registration numerics. It prefers the global user count when available and applies fallback rules when replies are missing.
Propagate counts into server records
scripts/probe.py, servers.json
Both probe transports carry counts into crawl results. Server records store the counts in separate fields instead of embedding them in descriptions.
Update and report counts
scripts/probe.py, README.md, .github/workflows/crawl.yml
apply_corrections updates counts when both values are present. The report displays user and channel columns. Contributor and workflow text describes the count sync.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ec446

An interrupted server probe can update stored counts before registration finishes. Require a completed registration before selecting its counts; the risk is otherwise narrow.

Require completed registration before selecting counts.

RPL_LUSERCLIENT and RPL_LUSERCHANNELS can populate both counts before registration reaches its terminal numeric. If the connection then closes, complete remains false, but counted still selects that pair. The synthesized zero path requires _welcomed, but the raw count pair does not.
