1. Will this project be open sourced?

It is! https://github.com/microsoft/mssql-django

2. What versions and platforms are supported?

  • Django 5.2, 6.0, and 6.1
  • CPython 3.10 through 3.14; Django 6.0 and 6.1 require Python 3.12 or newer
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2025
  • Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Database in Microsoft Fabric
  • pyodbc as the default database driver, with per-database opt-in support for mssql-python
  • Windows x64; Windows ARM64 with Python 3.11+; macOS 15+ on Intel or Apple silicon; Linux x64/ARM64 with glibc 2.28+ or musl 1.2+

mssql-django 2.0 requires a compatible mssql-python distribution even when pyodbc is selected. SUSE Linux ARM64 is not supported. Other environments must remain on mssql-django 1.8.0.

3. Will this project work with Azure SQL DB?

Yes, this project is tested and works against Azure SQL DB.

4. Where do I submit feature requests or bug reports?

Issues should be opened under this GitHub repository.

5. Are there any limitations or known issues?

The following features are currently not supported:

  • Altering a model field from or to AutoField in a migration

  • Continued support for new Django and SQL Server releases
  • Community-driven improvements and bug fixes

7. Is there a release schedule or roadmap?

We generally follow Django major releases by providing updated mssql-django support shortly after each Django release.
