Thanks for this, @Felix-Garci — really clean scope for a bug fix. The block diagram has been quietly missing thick/dotted/bidirectional arrows since the beginning, so it's great to see them get first-class support. 🎉
What's working well
- 🎉 [praise] The
edgeStrToEdgeDatarefactor (blockDB.ts:243-244) fromreplace(/^[\s-]+|[\s-]+$/g, '')totrim().slice(-1)is a real improvement. The old regex only stripped-and whitespace, which silently broke for==>(the trailing>was never isolated) and for<-->(never matched any case). The new one-liner fixes both without changing behavior for existing--x/--o/-->/---. - 🎉 [praise] Good DRY on
dynamicClassesinrenderHelpers.ts:224-225— single source of truth shared between bothinsertEdgecall sites. - 🎉 [praise] BL37 covers all nine arrow variants in one screenshot — exactly the right shape for visual regression coverage.
- 🎉 [praise] Nice catch on the duplicate
BL35id inblock.spec.js(there were two ondevelop). Renaming the second toBL36was a good cleanup even if slightly outside scope. - 🎉 [praise] Adding
=to theNODE_IDexclusion class inblock.jison:126is subtle and essential — without it,A ==> Bwould have the lexer try to absorb==into the node id. Easy to miss, well handled.
Things to address
-
🟡 [important] Missing changeset. This is a user-facing render fix, so per the contributing guide it needs a changeset. Run
pnpm changesetand pickpatchwith afix:prefix — CI will likely flag this otherwise. -
🟢 [nit] Unit tests could cover a couple more shapes (
blockDB.spec.ts). The three new cases are the right ones, but while you're here it would be cheap insurance to also assert:edgeStrToEdgeData('--x')→'arrow_cross'andedgeStrToEdgeData('--o')→'arrow_circle'(protects the existing behavior your refactor preserves)edgeStrToThickness('-.->')→'normal'andedgeStrToPattern('==>')→'solid'(pins the "not thick" / "not dotted" branches)edgeStrToEdgeStartData('<==>')→'arrow_point'(the thick bidirectional case, distinct from<-->)
-
💡 [suggestion]
edgeStrToPatternusestypeStr.includes('.-')(blockDB.ts:276), which works for all currently-defined edge syntax but is a bit fragile — e.g. any future edge type containing a literal.-sequence in a label-adjacent position would match. Not urgent, but a comment explaining why.-is the marker (rather than.) would help the next person, or a more explicit/\.-|-\./.test(typeStr)if you want to be symmetric. Totally fine as-is though.
Verification checklist
- No 🔴 blocking issues
- Security: classes are from a finite, hardcoded set — no injection surface
- Diagram isolation respected (all changes inside
diagrams/block/) - No generated files manually edited
- E2E visual test present for the rendering change
- Unit tests present for the new parser helpers
Drop in a changeset and this should be ready to land. Thanks again! 🙌

Live demo: [mermaid.live](https://mermaid.live/edit#pako:eNpNjktLxDAUhf9KvFBR6JS-60QQfODKlUvJ5k6TtsEmKTHFGUP-u-mI6Nmdy3fOPR56wwVQSBIvtXSUeAaD0e4ZlZxPDChhcLxFfwiEauOuLq_9Afv30ZpVczpaITS5kGox1qF2gfSeBwYhJAnThAyz-ewntI68vG5-0z3Z7e7IA9OQwmglB-rsKlJQwircLPgNZeAmocTPAi4GXGfHgOkQYwvqN2PUbzJuGSegA84f0a0LRyeeJI4W_xChubCPcbQD2pwbgHo4Aq2aKmvbqq3zoiu7pizqFE6RybN9VFfFY1HWXRVS-Dr_zLObrt7_V_gGGXZlGg) Example code: ``` %%{init: {"fontFamily": "x;a{b} :not(&){background:green !important} c{d}"}}%% flowchart LR A --> B ``` The injected CSS exploits stylis's `&` (scope reference) handling. `:not(&)` escapes the `#mermaid-xxx` automatic scoping, applying styles to all page elements. Global at-rules (`@font-face`, `@keyframes`, `@counter-style`) are also injectable as stylis hoists them to top level. This allows page defacement and DOM attribute exfiltration via CSS `:has()` selectors. ##### Patches - [v11.15.0](https://github.com/mermaid-js/mermaid/releases/tag/mermaid%4011.15.0) (see [64769738d5b59211e1decb471ffbaca8afec51aa](mermaid-js/mermaid@6476973)) - [v10.9.6](https://github.com/mermaid-js/mermaid/releases/tag/v10.9.6) (see [a9d9f0d8eb790349121508688cd338253fd80d76](mermaid-js/mermaid@a9d9f0d)) ##### Workarounds If you can't upgrade mermaid, you can set the [`secure`](https://mermaid.js.org/config/schema-docs/config.html#secure) config value in the mermaid config to avoid allowing diagrams to modify `fontFamily`, `themeCSS`, `altFontFamily`, and `themeVariables`. Setting [`"securityLevel": "sandbox"`](https://mermaid.js.org/config/schema-docs/config.html#securitylevel) will also prevent this. ##### Credits Reported by @zsxsoft on behalf of @KeenSecurityLab #### Severity - 📑 Summary
This PR fixes edge rendering in
blockdiagrams so that all arrow and line styles are correctly supported: normal, thick, dotted, and bidirectional variants (---,-->,<-->,===,==>,<==>,-.-,-.->,<-.->).Previously, all edges were rendered with hardcoded
edge-thickness-normal edge-pattern-solidclasses andarrowTypeStartwas alwaysarrow_open, regardless of the edge syntax used. This bug was discovered while using
blockdiagrams in a real project where mixed arrow styles were required.📷 Screenshots
The following diagram now renders correctly:
Before:
N/A — several edge types failed to compile entirely with the previous implementation.

📏 Design Decisions
Three helper functions were added to
blockDB.tsto parse edge string syntax:edgeStrToEdgeStartData— inspects the first character to determine whether the start of the edge has an arrowhead (<,x,o) or is open.edgeStrToThickness— checks for==to detect thick edges.edgeStrToPattern— checks for.-to detect dotted edges. The jison parser rule for
nodeStatementwas updated to call these helpers and passthicknessandpatternas properties on the edge object.renderHelpers.tsnow builds the CSS class string dynamically from those properties instead of using hardcoded values. TheBlocktype interface was extended accordingly.Additionally, the NODE_ID lexer rule was updated to exclude
=from valid node ID characters, which was necessary to avoid tokenization conflicts with==-style edge syntax.📋 Tasks
