Reviewed head 28a9057f8252ed0c525adeb37612f40476249c93 against main at f56353e389ddc8b730930252c6827fa12d633f34. Immediately before submission, both commits remained unchanged and the PR was open, non-draft and mergeable.
The change is needed: on the exact target snapshot, the new 23-case exclusion suite has 14 failures because installation exclusions are not forwarded and malformed inputs are accepted. All 23 pass on this head. It exposes the automatic-scan capability supplied by merged operator #429 and Kubescape #4116. Exact source tags v0.2.186 and v4.0.16 contain those merges and match the maintainer's release recommendation.
Validation precedes the operator-enabled gate, identifiers are trimmed and JSON-encoded, and the existing config checksum triggers rollout. Scheduled requests retain request-specific exclusions; the operator combines installation settings at dispatch, so saved schedules follow later configuration changes. The scanner copies exclusions into request-local scan configuration. Empty defaults preserve behavior. Image overrides need the documented compatible pair.
History: merged #890 exposes framework selection, a complementary setting; no duplicate or superseding exclusions change was found. Searches covered open/closed/merged PRs and issues using excludeControls, exclude controls, exclude-controls, exclusion, skip controls, automatic scans, configmap.yaml exclude, configmap scan, and defaultFrameworks, capped at 50 per query. Search indexing is not exhaustive. The broader search surfaced closed #896: its maintainer objection concerns backend/storage gating, not control exclusions, and does not apply here. No prior rejection of this approach was found. The earlier disabled-operator validation concern is addressed by the current code and regression tests; no remaining review blocker found.
Validation independently run in containers without credentials, networking, privileges or writable source mounts:
helm lint charts/kubescape-operator: pass; warning about missing optional alert subcharts.helm unittest charts/kubescape-operatorusing the CI image, pinned to digestsha256:28ea86c3e0b07f501f0c2e9c08b9f41e240f4a4b571cb5106b36cf0f0607e989: 21 suites, 168 tests and 1,084 snapshots pass.- New suite copied onto exact target: 14 fail / 9 pass, confirming regression coverage.
- Old local Helm 3.11/unittest 0.6.2 produces the same 38 snapshot failures on target and head; current CI image resolves these tooling differences.
Independent correctness and architecture reviews are clean; snapshot changes are limited to expected chart/image/checksum updates. GitHub DCO, security, dependency/license and CodeRabbit checks succeeded. Chart CI and allowlist CI require approval and are not claimed as passing. Live-cluster behavior and registry image contents were not independently exercised. No source changes or merge performed.
Overview
The operator and scanner now support excluding controls from automatic scans through operator #429 and kubescape #4116. This adds the Helm setting so users can configure it during installation:
The installation list applies to operator-triggered scans. Individual requests can add exclusions; an empty request does not clear the installation list. The default is empty, and malformed lists are rejected before installation. Excluded checks are removed from the assessment, rather than marked as passing.
This selects operator
v0.2.186and scannerv4.0.16, the versions recommended by @matthyx. It also updates the documentation, bumps the chart to1.41.0, and refreshes the affected snapshots.Validation
Helm lint and the full chart suite pass: 161 tests and 1,084 snapshots. Additional structural tests check the rendered JSON, input handling, image selection, and saved requests; they catch deliberately broken copies of the change.
Tested both published images together in a disposable Linux Kind cluster. Installation and request exclusions combine correctly, later scans restore their checks, and an automatic scheduled scan completes. The same saved schedule also restores the original checks after installation exclusions are removed.
Actual deletion requests carry the exclusions correctly. In this fixture, the exact request with and without exclusions returns the same empty-resource error, so successful deleted-resource assessment is not claimed.
