iOS - Messages are not marked as read if notifications are disabled #3501

Description

@ben-etc

Bug Description

Due to some notification fatigue, a few users on my homeserver have decided to turn off notifications unless they include user mentions or are in one-to-one chats. "Message" and "Encrypted' are disabled in Settings > Notifications.

When other users post messages in a room, the unread blue dot appears next to the room in the room list. Tapping the room loads the room at the "read up to here" marker, with all new messages below it.. Scrolling down does not seem to mark any of these as read. Upon reloading the room, the view goes back to the same "read up to here" start point as previous.

The only way to mark these messages as read appear to be:

  • Re-enable notifications and then reload the room and scroll past message to read them
  • Read the messages in a different client (e.g., Element Web)
  • Post a new message in the room inside FluffyChat

I have only been able to test this on iOS, unknown if it is present on other platforms.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Disable "Message" and "Encrypted" notifications in Settings > Notifications
  2. Receive messages in a room with multiple users
  3. Load the room to read messages
  4. Load a different room, then load the first room again. Messages in the first room remain in an unread state

StackTrace or logs

When reading messages in a room, they should be marked as "read" regardless of notification options. This means:

  1. Removing the blue "unread" dot next to the room
  2. Not loading at the "read up to here" line above messages that have already been seen by the user when the room was previously loaded
