[RFC] finix-stable, finix-unstable, and main branches #221

Open

Description

@deathbymanatee

forgive me if i'm not reading the room right, but personally i feel like finix right now has a "good enough" usability to justify maintaining different branches. however, the branches we decide to maintain ultimately depends on the release model we would like to move forward with.

personally, i am a proponent of a rolling-stable type model, where testing is designated to main or a finix-unstable type branch to iron out any glaring issues, while a stable branch is offered to users who would prefer a more stable experience with infrequent breaking changes, hence the name. speaking as an end user, i feel pretty good in the way things are and where they are going, and i think offering a well supported stable branch will further assist in adoption. this stable branch does not necessarily have to be versioned like nixos, and i would prefer it not to be to keep the repository clean. if users would like to stick to a particular version, they can always use dependency pinning to keep their install frozen at a particular point in history.

HOWEVER, this doesn't mean we need to make the pivot immediately; there are certainly a few things that should be ironed out, documentation that could stand to be written (been slacking on that myself), among other action items i'm sure are in the current backlog, but i figured it would be appropriate to plant the seed in our minds. it's something i've mentioned before in the discord but i figured it's worth putting here to show that it is something that we are considering.

    i would love to have this! it is important to keep in mind we aren't a package set, though... so we will have to stick to nixos releases for versions

    with finit v5 around the corner, the possibility of a rewritten pipewire package, and most importantly sessiond i think it would be practical enough to provide a stable 26.11 release of finix...
