On your Kindle: Settings → Device Options → Device Info
| Your Firmware | Jailbreak Method | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Below 5.18.1 | WinterBreak ✅ | This guide |
| 5.18.1 – 5.18.5.x | AdBreak | kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/AdBreak/ |
| 5.18.6 | Nosebleed | kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/Nosebleed/ |
| 5.19+ | SpringBreak | kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/SpringBreak/ |
If your firmware is 5.18.1+, STOP — WinterBreak won't work. Use the method above for your version.
- PC (Windows recommended; Mac/Linux need extra care with hidden files)
- USB cable for Kindle
- Kindle registered to an Amazon account
- A saved Wi-Fi network that reaches the internet
- 7-Zip or WinRAR (to extract
.tar.gz) - Back up any important sideloaded books/notes
Risks: Low but real chance of bricking if steps are skipped. Voids warranty. OTA updates can break the jailbreak. Legal in the US under DMCA exemptions but violates Amazon ToS.
Amazon can silently push firmware updates that kill your jailbreak. You must block this.
On your Kindle → Settings → Airplane Mode → ON
- Connect Kindle to PC via USB
- In the root of Kindle storage, delete any files matching:
update*.binupdate.bin.tmp.partial
Option A — Automated Script:
# Clone the filler tool
git clone https://github.com/iiroak/Kindle-Filler-Disk.git
cd Kindle-Filler-Disk
# macOS/Linux
chmod +x Filler.sh && ./Filler.sh
# Windows (PowerShell)
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\Filler.ps1Option B — Manual:
- Download pre-built filler ZIPs from https://github.com/iiroak/Kindle-Filler-Disk (check
Zips/folder) - Extract and copy dummy files to Kindle root until ~50–90 MB remains
Settings → Device Options → Device Info → available storage should show ≤ 90 MB
https://github.com/KindleModding/WinterBreak/releases/latest/download/WinterBreak.tar.gz
Use 7-Zip to extract WinterBreak.tar.gz → you'll get a folder with files including a hidden .active_content_sandbox directory.
- Kindle should still be connected via USB with Airplane Mode ON
- Copy ALL extracted files/folders to the root of Kindle storage
- macOS/Linux users: Ensure the hidden
.active_content_sandboxfolder is copied:# Verify it's there ls -la /Volumes/Kindle/.active_content_sandbox - Replace any existing files if prompted
- Safely eject the Kindle from your PC
- Reboot the Kindle (hold power → Restart)
- Open the Kindle Store (shopping cart icon on home screen)
- When prompted to turn off Airplane Mode → tap Yes
- The device will connect to Wi-Fi and load the store
- Look for the WinterBreak icon (may appear as "Mesquito" or show garbled text)
- Tap it
- Wait ~30 seconds — you should see: "Now you are ready to install the hotfix"
- Immediately turn Airplane Mode back ON
- Connect to PC and delete any
update.bin.tmp.partialfrom root
If you see "Unexpected error" or only the normal store:
LocalStorage Replacement method:
- Connect to PC → delete
.active_content_sandboxfolder - Reboot, disable Airplane Mode, connect to Wi-Fi
- Browse the Kindle Store for a few minutes (view categories, download a free sample)
- Re-enable Airplane Mode, reconnect to PC
- Delete
.active_content_sandbox/store/resource/LocalStorage - Re-copy WinterBreak files, delete stray update files
- Reboot and retry opening the Store
The hotfix makes the jailbreak survive reboots and (most) updates.

- KUAL should appear as an item in your Kindle library → open it
- Alternative: type
;login the Kindle search bar → selectmrpi - If KUAL shows white/blank screen → restart the device
Now that KUAL is installed, use the permanent OTA blocker:
- Download

renameotabinfolder toextensions/on Kindle - Open KUAL → find "Rename OTA binaries" → tap Rename
- You can now delete the filler files (
fill_disk/folder) to reclaim storage
Your Kindle is now jailbroken with KUAL installed. KOReader replaces Amazon's limited reader with an open-source document viewer supporting 30+ formats.
Your firmware (5.17.1.0.3) requires the kindlehf build (HardFloat,
for FW ≥ 5.16.3).

Download: koreader-kindlehf-arm-linux-gnueabihf-v20XX.XX.zip
⚠️ Do NOT usekindle,kindlepw2, orkindle-legacy— those are for older firmware/hardware.
cd ~/Downloads
unzip koreader-kindlehf-*.zip
# This produces two directories: koreader/ and extensions/koreader/- Connect Kindle via USB
- Copy the
koreader/folder to the root of Kindle storage - Copy the
extensions/koreader/folder into the existingextensions/folder - Safely eject
Open KUAL → you'll see a new "KOReader" dropdown → tap "Start KOReader"
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Start KOReader | Normal launch — Amazon framework keeps running |
| Start KOReader (no framework) | Kills Amazon UI first — more RAM, no multitask back |
| Start KOReader (ASAP) | Faster launch, skips sleep workarounds |
- KOReader should open to a file manager showing
/mnt/us/contents - Navigate to
documents/— your books should be visible - Open any book to verify the reader works
- To return to stock Kindle: use KOReader's menu → Quit (or reboot)
By default, you must manually open KUAL → Start KOReader after every reboot. To make KOReader launch automatically:
- Download Kindle-KOReader-On-Boot:
https://github.com/meepcat55/Kindle-KOReader-On-Boot - Copy the folder to
extensions/on Kindle - Eject Kindle, open KUAL → KOReader autolaunch → Install
- Kindle reboots. After ~85 seconds, KOReader launches automatically.
To disable: KUAL → KOReader autolaunch → Remove Emergency: Plug in USB, rename
koreader/koreader.shto disable
Replace Amazon's stock screensaver with anime pixel art when using KOReader.
What we used: 18 Waneella pixel art PNGs from
github.com/felipe-juan/jailbroken-kindle-stuff — pre-sized at 1236×1648.
- Connect Kindle via USB
- Create folder:
screensavers/in Kindle root - Copy all PNG images into it
- Clean macOS junk:
find /Volumes/Kindle/screensavers -name '._*' -delete - Safely eject Kindle
- Open KOReader → top menu → ☰ → Settings → Screen → Sleep screen
- Set Wallpaper → Random image from folder
- Browse to
/mnt/us/screensavers/→ long-press to select - Disable "Show message on sleep screen" (optional)
- Press power button to sleep — anime pixel art appears!
Note: Only works while KOReader is the active app. Sleeping from the native Kindle UI shows Amazon's default screensaver.
Add more images later: Drop PNGs (1236×1648) into the
screensavers/folder via USB, then restart KOReader.
These were downloaded/extracted during the jailbreak. Re-downloadable from the links above.
