Simple Java-based patient management application built with Maven and SQL for persistence. Intended to be run and developed on Windows using IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2.4.
- Java (21)
- Maven
- Relational SQL database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or H2 for local dev)
IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2.4- Docker desktop (optional, for containerized DB)
- JDK installed and
JAVA_HOMEconfigured - Maven installed or use the IntelliJ Maven support
- Database server accessible (or use an embedded DB for tests)
Run from project root:
mvn clean package
mvn test
-
From
IntelliJ: run the main application class located undersrc/main/java. -
Or build a jar and run from a terminal:
java -jar target/patient-management-*.jar
Application and datasource settings are in src/main/resources/application.properties or src/main/resources/application.yml.
Example application.properties:
spring.datasource.url=jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5432/patientdb
spring.datasource.username=your_user
spring.datasource.password=your_password
server.port=8080
Adjust values to match your environment.
-
Create the database (example for PostgreSQL):
createdb patientdb

Run schema/migration SQL if present. Check
src/main/resources/dborsrc/main/resources/schema.sqlfor migration files.
-
If the app fails to start, check logs in the IDE run console for stack traces.
-
Common issues:
- Wrong DB URL / credentials — verify
src/main/resources/application.properties. - Port already in use — change
server.port. - Missing migrations — ensure schema is applied.
- Wrong DB URL / credentials — verify
-
For more verbose Maven output:
mvn -X clean package
-
Unit tests are under
src/test/java. -
Run with:
mvn test
- Fork and create a feature branch.
