fix(notifications): send promotional emails only to the account's own address - #4551
Conversation
… address Promotional emails went to every address on the user's default alert channel, so teammates or a billing inbox added for alerts got offers they never signed up for, and any of them could unsubscribe the account. The API now passes the account's email as the recipient, and the notifications service sends to that address alone when a notification names one. Part of CON-1164

Reviewed changes
Reviewed all 11 changed files across apps/api, apps/notifications, and packages/console-api-types (single commit), and ran the changed unit specs in both apps, the notification-jobs functional spec, both window-handler integration specs, and tsc --noEmit in apps/api and the types package (all green).
- API — promotional emails go to the account's own address:
PromotionalNotificationService.sendnow setsrecipient: user.emailon the created notification and returns"no_email"for an account without an email. Both window-handler callers already skip email-less users and only compareoutcome === "sent", so the new outcome value is safe for every consumer. - Notifications — optional
recipientthreads the whole pipeline:EmailRecipientSchema(z.string().email()) on both the internal jobs DTO andNotificationCommandDto; the jobs controller passes it into the broker publish, and the router sends to[recipient]alone instead of the channel's addresses. - Alert path unchanged: chain-event and deployment-alert messages carry no
recipient, so they keep going to every address on the channel — with specs pinning both routing paths plus a 400 for a malformed recipient at the endpoint. - Contract artifacts hand-edited faithfully: I regenerated
swagger.internal.jsonfrom the PR code — therecipiententry is byte-identical to generator output, so the next regen won't drift. Deploy order is safe in both directions: the old notifications service strips the unknown field (zod default), and a notifications-first deploy just leaves it unused.
ℹ️ The window-handler integration specs don't pin recipient on the wire
The two *.handler.integration.ts specs assert the exact body posted to /internal/v1/jobs/notification — precise unsubscribe links included — but not recipient, so a regression that drops the field between PromotionalNotificationService and the HTTP call (e.g. someone rebuilding the body object inside NotificationService.createNotification) would leave every spec green. That is the one seam the new unit and functional specs don't already pin.
Technical details
# Window-handler integration specs don't assert `recipient`
## Affected sites
- `apps/api/src/app/services/first-purchase-bonus-window-opened/first-purchase-bonus-window-opened.handler.integration.ts:56` — asserts `body: expect.objectContaining({ notificationId, payload, unsubscribe })`, no `recipient`
- `apps/api/src/app/services/first-purchase-bonus-window-reminder/first-purchase-bonus-window-reminder.handler.integration.ts:54` — same shape
## Required outcome
- Each spec's expected body also asserts `recipient` equals the seeded person's email, pinning the field's survival from `PromotionalNotificationService.send` through `NotificationService.createNotification` to the HTTP body.
## Suggested approach
- `person` comes from `seedUser({ email: faker.internet.email(), ... })`; add `recipient: person.email` next to the existing `unsubscribe` assertion in each `expect.objectContaining` block. The `SentNotification` body type in each spec can stay as-is since the assertion is structural.GLM-5.3 | 𝕏

Reviewed changes
Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review — the new commit lands the one thing that review asked for: recipient pinned on the wire in both window-handler specs. Verified by running both integration specs (11 tests, all green on the hand-booted Postgres), and by the base-checkout pattern — reverting promotional-notification.service.ts to main while keeping the new assertions makes exactly the two updated tests fail on the missing recipient, so the assertions genuinely guard the seam rather than restating it. tsc --noEmit in apps/api stays clean.

SentNotificationbody type withrecipient?: stringto match the asserted shape.

Why
Part of CON-1164. Promotional emails went to every address on the account's default alert channel, not just the account's own email. A test send to the cloudmos account reached four people: the account address plus three addresses added there for alerts. Those people never subscribed to product updates, the footer tells them they did, and any of them can unsubscribe the account.
What
recipientemail. When it is set, the email goes to that address alone instead of the channel's addresses.PromotionalNotificationServicesetsrecipientto the account's email, and sends nothing (no_email) for an account without one. Both window handlers already skip those.Testing: unit specs for the DTO, jobs controller, router and promotional service, the jobs endpoint functional spec, and the window handler integration specs all pass. Mutation score is 100% on the changed lines of both apps.
