fix(network): leave the User-Agent header to the browser in http-sdk clients - #4543
Conversation
…clients Since axios 1.16 the fetch adapter sets its own User-Agent on every request, and the 1.20.0 upgrade (#4486) brought that to the browser. Chrome drops a User-Agent set by script, but Firefox sends it and lists it in the CORS preflight. rpc.akt.dev only allows Content-Type, Authorization, Traceparent and Baggage, so every chain query from Firefox was blocked and Console showed the network as down. createHttpClient and HttpService now default User-Agent to false in the browser, which tells axios to skip the header, so the browser sends its own. Node keeps the axios one. Fixes CON-1342

- Line 11: Update the header merge in the HTTP service so config.headers are
merged case-insensitively before applying the browser user-agent default,
ensuring a caller-provided lowercase user-agent overrides the default. Add or
update a test covering the lowercase user-agent spelling.
Review comments at @packages/http-sdk/src/utils/httpClient.ts:
- Line 20: Update createHttpClient to detect whether config.headers contains
User-Agent in either casing before constructing the fetch adapter, and only
apply keepBrowserUserAgent when no caller-provided User-Agent exists; preserve
the caller’s header through the existing config.headers spread.

- Line 5: Update keepBrowserUserAgent to detect browser worker contexts in
addition to window contexts, returning the User-Agent override for both
environments while preserving the empty object for non-browser runtimes.

keepBrowserUserAgent()helper — newpackages/http-sdk/src/utils/keepBrowserUserAgent.tsreturns{"User-Agent": false}whenwindowexists and{}otherwise, so browsers send their own User-Agent while Node keeps axios's, and a caller-set header still wins.- Default-header merge in both entry points —
createHttpClientand theHttpServiceconstructor spread the helper ahead of caller headers, covering every browser-side axios request in deploy-web (chain queries and console API clients alike). - New specs for both entry points — browser, non-browser, and caller-override cases, asserted against the real
Headersof the request passed to a stubbedfetchthrough the full axios header pipeline.
I verified the mechanism against the installed axios 1.20: the fetch adapter's forced UA (fetch.js:437) uses set(..., rewrite=false), which won't overwrite the existing false value, and AxiosHeaders.toJSON() drops false-valued headers — the same idiom axios's own http adapter documents for suppressing the header. Coverage also checks out: these are the only browser-side axios entry points in the monorepo (axios.create exists only in http-sdk; @akashnetwork/chain-sdk is connect-rpc based; raw axios in provider-console/stats-web resolves to the xhr adapter, which never sets a UA). npm test -w packages/http-sdk (52/52), tsc --noEmit, and eslint all pass on this branch.

- DOM-lib-free browser detection —
keepBrowserUserAgent()now returns the{"User-Agent": false}override when"window" in globalThis, replacing thetypeof windowcheck that fails to compile under the package'stsconfig.build.json(lib: ["ES2023"], no DOM — a barewindowidentifier is TS2304 there). The two forms agree in every runtime this package sees —windowis an own property ofglobalThisin browsers and absent in Node — so the browser/Node split and the caller-override precedence are unchanged.
Verified on this branch: npm run validate:types -w packages/http-sdk passes (reproduced that the old typeof window form errors with TS2304 under the same lib set), npm test -w packages/http-sdk is 52/52, and eslint . in the package reports 0 errors with only pre-existing warnings in untouched files.

Re-review of the delta since the initial review at 8ced2b8 (re-dispatched run; the head is unchanged since pullfrog's prior review of this delta, which this run re-verified from scratch).
- DOM-lib-free browser detection —
keepBrowserUserAgent()now detects the browser via"window" in globalThisinstead of a baretypeof windowcheck, which doesn't compile under the package's build tsconfig (@akashnetwork/dev-config/tsconfig.base-node.jsonsetslib: ["ES2023"], no DOM — a barewindowidentifier is TS2304 there). The browser/Node split and caller-override precedence are unchanged:windowis an own property ofglobalThisin browsers and absent in Node and workers.
Re-verified first-hand on this branch: npm run validate:types -w packages/http-sdk passes, npm test -w packages/http-sdk is 52/52, and eslint . --quiet in the package is clean. The specs exercise the new form through the real axios fetch-adapter pipeline (vi.stubGlobal("window", {}) defines the global, which "window" in globalThis sees).

Why
Fixes CON-1342
Fixes #4542
Since the axios 1.20.0 upgrade (#4486), Console doesn't work in Firefox. CORS blocks every chain query to
rpc.akt.dev, and the app shows the network as down.Since 1.16, the axios fetch adapter sets
User-Agent: axios/<version>on every request, browser included. Chrome ignores a User-Agent set by script, but Firefox sends it, so it lands in the CORS preflight'sAccess-Control-Request-Headers.rpc.akt.devonly allowsContent-Type, Authorization, Traceparent, Baggage, and the preflight fails. What
createHttpClientandHttpServicedefaultUser-Agenttofalsein the browser. axios readsfalseas "don't set this header", so the browser sends its own. Node keeps the axios one, and aUser-Agentset by the caller still wins.axios/1.20.0as the user agent.Testing: the new http-sdk specs pass with a 100% mutation score on the changed lines, and the deploy-web unit suite passes. I also bundled
createHttpClientand calledrpc.akt.devfrom a cross-origin page in Playwright's Firefox 144 and Chromium 143. Before the fix, Firefox failed with the same CORS error as the report and Chromium worked. After it, both got a 200.Summary by CodeRabbit
