The Babel 8 upgrade (PR #2621, 914ebb6b, 2026-08-15) was reverted on 2026-08-16.

Root cause: @babel/core@8 is pure ESM; babel-loader@10.1.1 uses CJS require("@babel/core") internally → ERR_REQUIRE_ESM at webpack build time. The --experimental-require-module Node.js 22 flag fixes the error but is not suitable for production tooling.

Re-attempt when:

babel-loader ships a version using dynamic import() for @babel/core, OR
--experimental-require-module is stable (likely Node.js 24 LTS).
