August 20, 1996:
From Team Meeting Notes (Meeting Notes/Team Meeting Notes/TMN960820.doc) pages 5 and 6.
Program Name
Working name “BestOf” is not liked by some. Is it really the “best”? Is this a good name?
Discussion examined some ideas of attributes we all like in a name as well as suggestions for names. These suggestions continued throughout the meeting.
Name Attributes:
Acronym or Not? -- Generally, would prefer NOT an acronym but is difficult to throw out a name without trying to de-acronym it, we found.
Same for BestOf and NextGen? -- Might be better to have one for this product and a different name for the Next Generation Software. Shows better delineation to sponsoring organizations.
List Words, throw out unimportant – Key words that seemed important are bold.
Key Words:
Building
Physics
Analysis
Design
Plants

Energy

ANGST(almost next generation simulation tool)
AND OTHERS TOO NUMEROUS TO DETAIL HERE
No conclusions were reached. Someone (Russ?) will list all the possibles and send it out via email.
Action Items:
All:Keep Thinking on name ideas.
Based on vote, taken shortly after the meeting, the name will be:
EnergyBase -- Working name for combined best of both DOE2 and BLAST
Possibly, the next generation tool will be called:
EnergyPlus
And thus it came to pass, that this tool would be named EnergyPlus into 2026 and beyond. @RKStrand you were the only one on that meeting that is still active here. But I bet @mjwitte would find it interesting if he's still checking his GitHub notifications :)
BTW the "defect" here is that it wasn't named ANGST.
