Track variable-length tensor sizes through compilation - #1292
Let compiled code reuse one graph for string tensors of any size. Today every new row count or vocabulary size compiles a new graph, so compiled prediction recompiles for each query size and fails after 8 sizes under fullgraph=True.
Description of the change
PyTorch rebuilds a string tensor nested inside another tensor, such as a categorical column's vocabulary, with the size it had when the graph was traced. #1245 prevented wrong results from this (a four-entry vocabulary returned with three entries) by requiring every size and stride to match exactly, which forces a recompile for each new size.
Each VarLenTensor now also stores an empty tensor shaped like itself ((*size, 0), with no data). torch.compile tracks the sizes of inner tensors correctly, so size and stride are taken from it and no longer need to match exactly. New sizes reuse one dynamic graph, and the result keeps its correct size.
Validation
A new test compiles a function over categorical vocabularies, calls it with changing row counts and vocabulary sizes, and checks exact contents and at most two graphs. Without this change it fails: either it compiles a new graph for every size (current main) or it returns vocabularies of the wrong size (without the exact-size check).
Eight query batches of 5 to 1,000 rows compile 2 graphs instead of 8.
Tensor, alignment, recipe and compile tests pass on CPU and on an NVIDIA L4.
Creating the empty tensor adds about 1–3 µs per string tensor operation in eager mode on CPU.
Additional details
Storage offset still has to match exactly, because PyTorch does not pass it back when rebuilding the tensor. It only affects inputs that are slices starting at different rows.
Compiled code rebuilt nested string tensors (such as categorical
vocabularies) with the size seen at trace time, so a later call could
return a four-entry vocabulary with three entries. Guarding size and
stride by value avoided that but recompiled for every new row count or
vocabulary size. Carry size and stride in an empty inner tensor instead,
whose shape torch.compile tracks symbolically: new sizes now reuse one
dynamic graph and keep their exact contents.

Variable-length tensors now retain their size and stride information when flattened and reconstructed, keeping tensor metadata consistent.
Tests
Added regression coverage for compiled categorical tensors with string categories across repeated calls using different row counts and vocabularies in static and dynamic modes.
Added coverage confirming compiled string tensors preserve their size, stride, storage offset, and contents for transposed and sliced inputs.
VarLenTensor stores size and stride in an internal tensor used during flattening and unflattening. Compilation tests check strided layout preservation and categorical tensor values and compile counts across varying inputs.
Changes: VarLenTensor layout metadata
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Encode and restore layout metadata sdm/tensor/var_len.py
VarLenTensor stores size and stride in an internal tensor. Flattening includes that tensor, and unflattening reads its shape and strides.
A compiled detach test checks size, stride, storage offset, and values for a strided StringTensor view. A categorical tensor compilation test checks values and limits compiled frames to two for dynamic=None and dynamic=True.
The change is mergeable, with recommended CUDA coverage to validate the compiled layout behavior across supported devices.

make creates both inputs on CPU, so this test does not exercise the new layout tensor on CUDA. Parameterize the device and pass it to StringTensor.from_list and torch.arange. As per path instructions, parametrization must cover relevant device variants. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update make and its compilation test to accept and parameterize the device
across the relevant device variants; pass the selected device to
StringTensor.from_list and torch.arange so both inputs are created on that
device.
These inputs use contiguous, one-dimensional category vectors. Add a compiled VarLenTensor case with a non-contiguous stride. Assert the result’s stride, storage offset, and values. The existing compiled reconstruction test checks values but not stride. As per path instructions, check that changes in sdm/ have corresponding test coverage. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Extend the compiled reconstruction test around compiled so it includes a
VarLenTensor with a non-contiguous stride; assert the reconstructed result’s
stride, storage offset, and values to verify compilation preserves the input
layout.
Add a compiled multidimensional StringTensor reconstruction case.
test_compiled_var_len_reconstruction only uses a one-dimensional tensor and does not assert size(). The changed unflatten path derives size and stride from _layout, so a multidimensional size regression can pass while the flat values remain correct. Add a nested StringTensor case that asserts both shape and values.

Exercise a nonzero storage offset in the compilation test.
The test creates unsliced vocabularies, so it does not cover this case. The existing tolist() assertion would detect an offset loss once the vocabulary is sliced because the expected values would change.

withCUDA explicitly parameterizes tests over CPU and cuda:0, and StringTensor.from_list supports the device argument. The changed _layout allocation follows the offset device, so CUDA is a relevant variant for this compiled path. Add the CUDA case and assert the output device.
