MEDIUM: the user id is baked into every CalDAV collection path and calendar_id, so real multi-user identity orphans every existing calendar #144

Closed

Description

@ClaydeCode

Severity: MEDIUM today, unbounded later. Class: forward-compatibility. Not reproduced — settling test below.

What breaks

server/index.js:77-86 composes the internal CalDAV account URL from the user id:

const localCalDAVCUrl = process.env.INTERNAL_CALDAV_URL || 'https://localhost:5232';
accounts.unshift({
    id: 'internal-caldav',
    url: `${localCalDAVCUrl}/${userId}/`,

Under the shipping template that is CALDAV_USERNAME=owner, so every Radicale collection lives under /owner/… on disk. Calendar ids are the literal string internal-caldav::/owner/<slug>/, and those strings are stored in calendar_shares.calendar_id and user_calendar_shares.calendar_id; radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:83 reconstructs them:

calendar_id = f"internal-caldav::/{owner_id}/{calendar_slug}/"

shard_core PR FreeshardBase/freeshard#147 ("Phase 1 identity substrate", open, approved-unmerged) creates a users table with numeric BIGSERIAL ids, and "the stringified numeric id becomes the OIDC sub in phase 2a". So the identifier the calendar will receive as sub is a short numeric string — "1" for the owner.

Flipping AUTH_METHOD from env to oidc changes userId from "owner" to that sub (server/routes/auth.js:81). From that moment:

  • the internal account URL becomes http://webcalendar-caldav:5232/1/, a collection root that does not exist;
  • Radicale's rights plugin grants nothing under /owner/ — user.lower() == owner_id.lower() is "1" == "owner", false — and there is no user_calendar_shares row either (radicale_custom_rights.py:72,93);
  • every stored calendar_id still points at /owner/…;
  • there is no migration, and no code path anywhere renames a collection root.

Net effect: the user's entire calendar history becomes invisible on the day the platform's identity story lands, and the app shows an empty, freshly provisioned calendar. Nothing errors, which is worse.

Not reproduced

No shard runs OIDC, so this is read from the code paths rather than observed. Settling test: on a local stack, install with AUTH_METHOD=env CALDAV_USERNAME=owner, create an event, then restart the container with AUTH_METHOD=oidc pointed at any issuer that mints sub=1, and observe that the calendar list is empty while the collection tree still shows /data/collections/collection-root/owner/.

Fix direction

Decouple the storage identity from the login identity before phase 2 lands, not after. Give every user a stable internal id at first sight (the users table already has user_id), key Radicale collections and all calendar_id strings on that internal id, and treat the OIDC sub / CALDAV_USERNAME as an alias recorded in users — which radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:16-22 already half-does (SELECT user_id FROM users WHERE username = ?). Then an AUTH_METHOD change is a new alias row, not a data migration. Doing this while the shipping config has exactly one user is a one-row backfill; doing it after multi-user ships is a per-user data move.

Related: #121 correctly says there is no issuer today and the multi-user features are dead code; it does not say what the migration costs when the issuer arrives. Also note #77 (RSVPs against a hardcoded placeholder address) is gated on the same phase-2 work, since PR #147 is what supplies a user email (owner@<shard-domain>).

    Partly fixed on origin/master @ 61a28b7. Not closing.

    The alias plumbing landed; the alias itself is never created across an identity change, so the reported outcome — an existing calendar tree becoming invisible when AUTH_METHOD flips env → oidc — still happens.

    What did change

    • server/index.js:113,120,127 — the internal account is no longer composed from the raw session id. It now resolves canonicalUsername = (await Db.getUsernameByUserId(userId)) || userId and builds ${localCalDAVCUrl}/${canonicalUsername}/. The snippet quoted in the issue body (.../${userId}/) is gone.
    • server/utils/calendarAuth.js:58-70 — ownership is checked bidirectionally through the users mapping, not only by string equality of userId === ownerId.
    • server/utils/calendarAuth.js:77-91,93-117 — share matching now tries userId, its mapped user_id and its mapped username, and matches owner segments in either form.
    • radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:19-26 already resolved login → user_id before this.

    So the read path can consume an alias. Nothing writes one.

    Why it is still live

    Db.upsertUser (server/db.js:1129-1174) refuses to attach an existing username to a new user_id. On the first OIDC login after the flip there is already a row ('owner','owner') written by server/index.js:88 during env mode, so at server/db.js:1138-1140 conflictingUser is truthy and targetName falls back to userId: the new subject is inserted as ('1','1'), not aliased to owner. The else branch at server/db.js:1157-1161 bails the same way. users is also user_id PRIMARY KEY / username UNIQUE (server/db.js:79-82), one row per identity — it cannot hold "this sub is another name for that storage id", which is what the fix direction asked for.

    No migration renames a collection root or rewrites stored calendar_id strings (server/utils/migrations.js, migrations 001-005).

    Reproduction against 61a28b7

    Driving the real Db.upsertUser / checkCalendarAccess against a scratch DB in /tmp (env-mode login as owner, then a first OIDC login), three issuer behaviours:

    === A (issuer mints preferred_username=owner): env user 'owner' -> OIDC sub='1', preferred_username='owner' ===
      users after env-mode login: [{"user_id":"owner","username":"owner"}]
      env-mode access to internal-caldav::/owner/personal/: {"allowed":true,"isOwner":true}
      users after oidc login: [{"user_id":"owner","username":"owner"},{"user_id":"1","username":"1"}]
      canonicalUsername for sub='1': '1'  -> internal-caldav url http://webcalendar-caldav:5232/1/
      collection on disk lives at /data/collections/collection-root/owner/ => MISMATCH (orphaned)
      oidc-mode access to internal-caldav::/owner/personal/: {"allowed":false,"status":403,"reason":"Access denied: You do not have permission for this calendar"}

    === B (issuer mints an email username): env user 'owner' -> OIDC sub='1', preferred_username='owner@shard.example' ===
      users after oidc login: [{"user_id":"owner","username":"owner"},{"user_id":"1","username":"owner@shard.example"}]
      canonicalUsername for sub='1': 'owner@shard.example'  -> internal-caldav url http://webcalendar-caldav:5232/owner@shard.example/
      collection on disk lives at /data/collections/collection-root/owner/ => MISMATCH (orphaned)
      oidc-mode access to internal-caldav::/owner/personal/: {"allowed":false,"status":403,"reason":"Access denied: You do not have permission for this calendar"}

    === C (issuer mints only sub, no username claim): env user 'owner' -> OIDC sub='1', preferred_username='1' ===
      users after oidc login: [{"user_id":"owner","username":"owner"},{"user_id":"1","username":"1"}]
      canonicalUsername for sub='1': '1'  -> internal-caldav url http://webcalendar-caldav:5232/1/
      collection on disk lives at /data/collections/collection-root/owner/ => MISMATCH (orphaned)
      oidc-mode access to internal-caldav::/owner/personal/: {"allowed":false,"status":403,"reason":"Access denied: You do not have permission for this calendar"}

    All three land on the issue's outcome: the account URL points at a collection root that does not exist, and access to every stored internal-caldav::/owner/... id is refused. Nothing throws — same silent-empty-calendar failure mode as filed.

    Read, not executed (no Radicale here): even if the alias were written as ('1','owner'), radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:19-26 canonicalises the CalDAV login owner back to user_id 1, and radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:22 then compares "1" == "owner" and returns "". The auth plugin keys on user_id while collection paths and radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:33 key on the username segment; those two need to agree before the alias approach works end to end.

    Test evidence

    server/test/issue144_user_id_caldav_collection_path.test.js is the only file in server/test mentioning #144.

    NODE_ENV=test node --test server/test/issue144_user_id_caldav_collection_path.test.js
    # tests 5  # pass 5  # fail 0

    It passes, but it only exercises a fresh user (sub-uuid-144-multitenant / alice144) with no pre-existing row — it never simulates the transition the issue is about, where the username is already taken by the old identity.

    I broke the fix twice:

    • Removed the mapped-owner block at server/utils/calendarAuth.js:58-70 (back to isOwner = (userId === ownerId)): red, # pass 3 # fail 2. That part has teeth.
    • Reverted server/index.js:113 to const canonicalUsername = userId; — i.e. exactly the defect quoted in the issue body: green, # pass 5 # fail 0. Subtest 4 ("Session accounts initializes internal-caldav URL with canonical username") never imports or calls server/index.js; it rebuilds the URL string inline at lines 69-71 and asserts it against its own construction. The headline change is uncovered.

    To close this

    Needed: upsertUser (or a dedicated alias table) able to record a second login identity for an existing storage identity instead of silently declining on conflict; agreement between radicale_custom_auth's user_id canonicalisation and the username-keyed collection path; and a test that starts from an ('owner','owner') row, logs in as a new sub, and asserts the pre-existing internal-caldav::/owner/... calendar is still reachable — that test must go red when server/index.js:113 is reverted.

    Working tree restored, git status --porcelain empty; scratch files were kept in /tmp.

    Still live on origin/master @ 86ff8d1. Not closing.

    Re-checked against 86ff8d1a07db362585d30c1f0bf69fb68d84bf0a. This is the same verdict as my comment on 61a28b7, and for the same reason: the alias read path exists, the alias is still never written across an identity change, so an existing calendar tree still becomes invisible when AUTH_METHOD flips env → oidc.

    The cited commit does not touch this code

    c7ffd93 ("feat: autonomous vacation homework progress update") is in history, but git show --stat c7ffd93 lists only e2e/calendar.spec.js, public/, scratch/, scratchpad.md, server/routes/events.js, server/utils/ical.js and three unrelated test files. It changes no file on this issue's path — not server/db.js, not server/index.js, not server/utils/calendarAuth.js, not radicale/.

    Three other commits did touch those files between 61a28b7 and 86ff8d1, so I diffed them:

    None of them changes alias creation. server/utils/calendarAuth.js and server/test/issue144_user_id_caldav_collection_path.test.js are byte-identical to 61a28b7.

    Why it is still live

    The read path still resolves an alias — server/index.js:138 is const canonicalUsername = (await Db.getUsernameByUserId(userId)) || userId;, feeding :145-146 and :151-152; server/utils/calendarAuth.js:59-70 checks ownership bidirectionally through the users mapping. That part is unchanged and still works.

    But nothing writes the alias. Db.upsertUser (server/db.js:1133) still declines on username conflict in both branches:

    • server/db.js:1152-1155 — for a new user_id, const targetName = (conflictingUser && newUsername !== userId) ? userId : newUsername;. The row ('owner','owner') already exists from env mode (server/index.js:108-110), so the new subject is inserted as ('1','1'), not aliased to owner.
    • server/db.js:1188-1200 — for an existing user_id, a conflicting username now updates email and then returns. The username is still never reassigned.

    The table also still cannot express the alias: user_id TEXT PRIMARY KEY, username TEXT UNIQUE NOT NULL (server/db.js:78-83) is one row per identity, and getUsernameByUserId (server/db.js:1393-1400) reads exactly that one row. No migration renames a collection root or rewrites stored calendar_id strings — server/utils/migrations.js is unchanged and still stops at version 5 (:35,:44,:54,:64,:87).

    Reproduction against 86ff8d1

    Driving the real Db.upsertUser / checkCalendarAccess against a scratch DB in /tmp (env-mode login as owner, then a first OIDC login), three issuer behaviours:

Nothing throws — the same silent-empty-calendar failure mode as reported. The users.email column added since 61a28b7 changes scenario B's row contents but not the orphaning.

    Why it is still live

    The read path still resolves an alias and still works: server/index.js:173 is const canonicalUsername = (await Db.getUsernameByUserId(userId)) || userId;, feeding :180-181 and :186-187; server/utils/calendarAuth.js:59-70 checks ownership bidirectionally through the users mapping.

    All three land on the filed outcome: the account URL points at a collection root that does not exist, and access to every stored internal-caldav::/owner/... id is refused. Nothing throws — the same silent-empty-calendar failure mode as reported. The env-mode baseline line in each block is the control: before the flip, access is {"allowed":true,"isOwner":true}.

    Read, not executed (no Radicale in this container): even if the alias were written as ('1','owner'), radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:20 canonicalises the CalDAV login owner back to user_id 1 (SELECT user_id FROM users WHERE username = ? OR user_id = ?), and radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:22 then compares "1" == "owner" and returns "". The rights plugin never consults users at all — its only DB query is the user_calendar_shares lookup at radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:51 — so it keys purely on the username-shaped path segment while auth keys on user_id. Those two must agree before the alias approach works end to end.

    Test evidence

    server/test/issue144_user_id_caldav_collection_path.test.js is still the only file in server/test mentioning #144, and it is unchanged since 61a28b7.

    NODE_ENV=test node --test server/test/issue144_user_id_caldav_collection_path.test.js

    It passes, but it only exercises a fresh user (userId = 'sub-uuid-144-multitenant', username = 'alice144', :9-10) and deletes any pre-existing row at :13 before starting — so it never simulates the transition this issue is about, where the username is already held by the old identity.

    I broke the fix twice:

    • Removed the mapped-owner block at server/utils/calendarAuth.js:59-70 (back to isOwner = (userId === ownerId)): red, # pass 3 # fail 2. That part has teeth.

Subtest 4 ("Session accounts initializes internal-caldav URL with canonical username", :64-72) never imports or calls server/index.js; it recomputes canonicalUsername itself at :65 and rebuilds the URL string inline at :70, then asserts it against its own construction. The headline change is still uncovered.

    To close this

    Unchanged from the last two rounds:

    1. upsertUser (or a dedicated alias table) able to record a second login identity for an existing storage identity, instead of silently declining on conflict.
    2. Agreement between radicale_custom_auth's user_id canonicalisation and the username-keyed collection path in radicale_custom_rights.
    3. A test that starts from an ('owner','owner') row, logs in as a new sub, and asserts the pre-existing internal-caldav::/owner/... calendar is still reachable — and that goes red when server/index.js:173 is reverted to const canonicalUsername = userId;.

    Working tree restored, git status --porcelain empty; scratch files kept in /tmp.

    Automated attempt stopped without a change: Agent reported blocked: Blocked on a product/security decision: the issue doesn't say how a new OIDC sub (e.g. '1') should be linked to the existing 'owner' storage identity. The options are matching preferred_username, a shard_core owner claim that doesn't exist yet (PR #147 unmerged), letting the first OIDC login claim it (a member could take over the owner's data), or an explicit admin mapping such as LEGACY_OWNER_OIDC_SUB, and each has different security consequences. A human must pick the rule and confirm whether 'owner' stays the permanent storage id or collections move to a new internal id; after that, the alias table, the Radicale auth/rights fix and the owner-to-sub transition test are straightforward.

    Fixed: PR #432 squash-merged into main on the driver's local gates (GitHub CI not used) (one commit; git revert it to undo).

    • Suites: lint: 1 passed, 0 failed | node: 1768 passed, 0 failed | python: 106 passed, 0 failed | e2e: 76 passed, 0 failed
    • Declared tests fail without the production change and pass with it (output in the PR).
