MEDIUM: a shard backup copies a live WAL-mode SQLite with no quiesce step; restorability is unverified #120

Closed

Description

@ClaydeCode

Severity: MEDIUM. Class: risky.

What breaks

The nightly shard backup is an rclone sync of a live directory containing a SQLite database in WAL mode, with no quiesce step of any kind — no VACUUM INTO, no sqlite3 .backup, no container stop, no WAL checkpoint. rclone copies webcalendar.db, webcalendar.db-wal and webcalendar.db-shm at three different instants; a write landing between those instants can produce a restored database that is torn.

The good half is established and worth stating: the data is in the backup set, and it survives updates. {{ fs.app_data }} renders to <path_root_host>/user_data/app_data/<app>, config.toml sets [services.backup] directories = ["core", "user_data"], and _reinstall_app deletes only core/installed_apps/<name>. What is unverified is not whether the bytes are copied — it is whether the copy restores.

Three processes share that database file and only one of them sets a busy timeout:

Process Opens the DB at busy_timeout
Node app server/db.js:22-23 (PRAGMA journal_mode = WAL) 5000 ms
Radicale auth/rights plugins radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:2 default (0)
Sync worker sync-worker/sync_worker.py:4 default (0)

Where

  • server/db.js:22-23 — PRAGMA journal_mode = WAL, busy_timeout 5000.
  • radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:2, sync-worker/sync_worker.py:4 — the two zero-timeout openers.
  • freeshard shard_core/service/backup.py:52-135 — CronTask(start_backup, "0 3 * * *"), an rclone sync of the live tree.
  • freeshard shard_core/service/app_installation/util.py:90-95 — where {{ fs.app_data }} resolves to.
  • freeshard shard_core/service/app_installation/worker.py:159-180 — _reinstall_app, which leaves user_data alone.

How to reproduce

Not reproduced. No backup was taken and no restore was attempted. This finding is a code reading plus an unproven consistency premise, and it is filed as an open question, not as an observed failure.

The test that settles it: on a throwaway shard, drive continuous event creation through the app, trigger a backup mid-write, restore into a fresh shard, then run PRAGMA integrity_check on the restored webcalendar.db and compare row counts for events, sync_queue and user_calendar_shares against the source. Green on both means this can be closed as a non-issue; a failed integrity_check or a short count means it is real.

Why it matters

A backup that has never been restored is not a backup, and the failure mode here is silent: the sync completes, the operator sees a healthy backup, and the tearing only surfaces on the day someone actually needs the restore. That is also the one day when there is no second copy to compare against.

Fix direction, if the test fails: add an app-level hook that checkpoints the WAL and writes a consistent webcalendar.db.backup (via VACUUM INTO or the SQLite backup API) into the backed-up directory, and let the backup pick that file up instead of the live one. Setting a non-zero busy_timeout in the Python openers is worth doing regardless of how the test comes out.

    Board cleanup, 2026-08-14. 1 issue that were filed only because the review could not comment on an existing one (#132) are being closed, and what they said about this issue is folded in below, verbatim. Closing does not delete them — each is still readable in full at its own number.

    From #132 — LOW: all three processes already have a 5000 ms busy_timeout — the supporting claim in #120 is wrong

    Severity: LOW. This corrects one supporting claim inside #120 ("a shard backup copies a live WAL-mode SQLite with no quiesce step"). #120's conclusion stands; this one table in it does not, and a fix aimed at it would be wasted work.

    Partly fixed on origin/main @ 61a28b7. Not closing. (origin/master is 5a92edd, an ancestor; it differs from main only in package.json, package-lock.json and issue179_*.test.js, so everything below applies to both.)

    The commit cited, d4213fb, does contain real work for this issue, and the helper it added is correct. But nothing calls it, and the backup path this issue is about is byte-for-byte unchanged. I also did the restore test the issue asked for, and it fails: the live-tree copy produces an unrestorable database.

    What actually changed

    d4213fb added three functions to the Db object and one route:

    • server/db.js:2616 — Db.quiesceDatabase(mode), PRAGMA wal_checkpoint(<mode>).
    • server/db.js:2634 — Db.createBackup(targetPath), checkpoint + VACUUM INTO (server/db.js:2645) with a fs.copyFileSync fallback.
    • server/db.js:2661 — Db.verifyDatabaseIntegrity(targetPath), PRAGMA integrity_check.
    • server/index.js:418 — POST /internal/db/quiesce, behind requireInternal, which calls quiesceDatabase and nothing else.

    Db.createBackup works. I measured it (see below). The problem is what surrounds it.

    Why the issue is still live

    Db.createBackup has no callers. Across the whole repo, excluding node_modules:

    $ grep -rn "createBackup" --include=*.js --include=*.py --include=*.json --include=*.toml --include=*.yml . | grep -v node_modules
    server/db.js:2634:  async createBackup(targetPath) {
    server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:58: ... typeof Db.createBackup ...
    server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:59: ... await Db.createBackup(backupPath);

    Definition and test, no production caller. There is no scheduler, no route, no startup hook — grep -rn "setInterval\|cron\|schedule" server/*.js returns nothing, and the string backup appears in only four files in the repo (scratchpad.md, server/db.js, and two test files), in no manifest, docker-compose.yml, Dockerfile or justfile. So no consistent webcalendar.db.backup is ever written into {{ fs.app_data }}, and the nightly rclone sync still picks up the live webcalendar.db / -wal / -shm exactly as described in the issue. The fix direction in the issue was "write a consistent file into the backed-up directory and let the backup pick that file up instead of the live one" — the first half exists as a library function, the second half does not exist at all.

    The one thing that is wired up does not help. POST /internal/db/quiesce only checkpoints. Writes resume the instant it returns, so the rclone read window is still fully exposed. Measured, not assumed — see round 3 below.

    Restore test: the issue's open question, now settled

    The issue filed this as "Not reproduced … an unproven consistency premise". It reproduces. Scratch scripts under /tmp, nothing written into the clone.

    Round 1 — today's backup path. ~19 MB WAL database, a second process committing UPDATE batches with wal_autocheckpoint = 64, then a chunked read of webcalendar.db (~315 ms, as rclone streams a file) followed by -wal and -shm. Three rounds:

    seeded live db bytes= 18960384
    round 1 staggered live copy (main file read took 314ms): integrity=*** in database main ***
    Tree 2 page 4837 cell 10: Rowid 57212 out of order ...                      rows=57611
    round 2 staggered live copy (main file read took 313ms): integrity=*** in database main ***
    Tree 2 page 3612 cell 11: Rowid 46812 out of order ...                      rows=60141
    round 3 staggered live copy (main file read took 324ms): integrity=*** in database main ***
    Tree 2 page 4314 cell 11: Rowid 55912 out of order ...                      rows=60131
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000

    3/3 restores fail PRAGMA integrity_check, and all three row counts are wrong against a source that holds a constant 60000. The mechanism is the one the issue guessed at: a checkpoint rewrites pages of the main file after the copy has already read past them.

    Round 2 — Db.createBackup under the identical load. It is correct:

    round 1 Db.createBackup (fallback=false, 19537920 bytes): integrity=ok rows=60000
    round 2 Db.createBackup (fallback=false, 19726336 bytes): integrity=ok rows=60000
    round 3 Db.createBackup (fallback=false, 19902464 bytes): integrity=ok rows=60000
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000

    This is the part of d4213fb worth keeping. It just needs a caller.

    Round 3 — /internal/db/quiesce immediately before the copy, i.e. the best case if the shard backup cron were taught to call the one endpoint that shipped:

    round 1 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy: integrity=*** in database main ***
    Tree 83 page 5056 cell 154: invalid page number 5564 rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 2 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy: integrity=*** in database main ***
    Tree 83 page 5017 cell 10: Rowid 55626 out of order     rows=60193
    round 3 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy: integrity=*** in database main ***
    Tree 83 page 4262 cell 12: Rowid 54196 out of order     rows=60065

    Still 3/3 corrupt, one of them unreadable outright. A point-in-time checkpoint buys nothing when the copy takes 300 ms and the writer never stops.

    The test that shipped with the fix

    server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js, run on its own:

    $ NODE_ENV=test node --test server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js
    # tests 3   # pass 3   # fail 0

    Green, but it is an existence check, not a consistency check. I broke the fix three ways:

    1. Replaced the body of Db.createBackup with a raw fs.copyFileSync(dbPath, targetPath) — no checkpoint, no VACUUM INTO. This is the defect the issue reports, reintroduced verbatim into the function that is supposed to fix it. Result: 3/3 pass, still green. The test backs up an idle test database, so a raw copy passes integrity_check too.
    2. Removed the checkpoint entirely — swapped PRAGMA wal_checkpoint(${normalizedMode}) for PRAGMA user_version, so no WAL work happens at all. Result: 3/3 pass, still green. The row.busy ?? 0 / row.log ?? 0 defaulting at server/db.js:2626-2628 turns the missing columns into zeroes, and the test's assert.strictEqual(result.busy, 0, 'WAL checkpoint must not be blocked/busy') cannot tell a successful checkpoint from a checkpoint that never ran.
    3. Deleted Db.quiesceDatabase outright — 3/3 fail. So the suite detects the function being gone, and nothing weaker than that.

    A test that stays green when the reported defect is pasted back into the fixed function is not evidence the defect is gone.

    What would close this

    • A caller for Db.createBackup that lands a consistent webcalendar.db.backup inside {{ fs.app_data }} on a schedule that precedes the 03:00 rclone sync, and, ideally, an exclude for the live webcalendar.db* triplet so the corrupt copy is not in the backup set at all.
    • A test that writes concurrently while the backup is taken and asserts integrity_check plus a row count on the restored file. Round 1 above is a working template; as it stands it goes red against today's backup path and green against Db.createBackup, which is the discrimination the current test lacks.

    One correction to the issue body: the busy_timeout table is out of date. server/db.js:76 is now 30000 ms, and sync-worker/sync_worker.py:94,479 open with timeout=30.0. The Radicale plugins (radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:16,40, radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:47) still pass no timeout, but that is Python's 5 s default rather than 0, which is the point #132 made. This does not affect the conclusion — none of it is on the backup path.

    Working tree restored after every break; git status --porcelain is empty at 61a28b7.

    Still live on origin/master @ 86ff8d1. Not closing.

    The commit cited in the comment above, c7ffd93 ("feat: autonomous vacation homework progress update"), is an ancestor of 86ff8d1, but it does not touch the backup path. Its 20 changed files are e2e/calendar.spec.js, public/css/app.css, public/index.html, public/js/dialogFocus.js, seven scratch/*.js files, scratchpad.md, server/routes/events.js, server/utils/ical.js and four server/test/issue*.test.js files. Neither server/db.js nor server/index.js is among them.

    Nothing has changed for this issue since my last comment

    Against 61a28b7, the commit I reviewed on 2026-09-28:

    • The three functions added by d4213fb are byte-identical. git show 61a28b7:server/db.js sliced from quiesceDatabase to checkHealth diffs clean against the same slice of server/db.js at 86ff8d1. They have only moved: Db.quiesceDatabase is now server/db.js:2721, Db.createBackup server/db.js:2739 (VACUUM INTO at server/db.js:2749), Db.verifyDatabaseIntegrity server/db.js:2765.
    • server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js is unchanged — git diff 61a28b7 HEAD on that path is empty.
    • The /internal/db/quiesce route is unchanged, now at server/index.js:449.

    The two things that would close this are still absent

    1. Db.createBackup still has no production caller. Whole repo, excluding node_modules:

    $ grep -rn "createBackup" --include=*.js --include=*.py --include=*.json --include=*.toml --include=*.yml --include=*.sh . | grep -v node_modules
    server/db.js:2739:  async createBackup(targetPath) {
    server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:53: it('should create an atomic, restorable backup file using Db.createBackup', ...
    server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:58:    assert.strictEqual(typeof Db.createBackup, 'function', ...
    server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:59:    const backupResult = await Db.createBackup(backupPath);

    Definition and test, nothing else. There is still no scheduler: grep -rn "setInterval\|node-cron\|cron\.\|schedule(" server/*.js server/routes/*.js server/utils/*.js returns exactly one hit, server/utils/webcalSubscription.js:161, which is the webcal poll timer. grep -in "backup\|quiesce" over docker-compose.yml, Dockerfile, justfile and package.json returns nothing. The string backup now appears in four files — scratchpad.md, server/db.js, server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js and server/test/issue137_encryption_key_restore.test.js — and in the last of those only inside prose and a key fixture (server/test/issue137_encryption_key_restore.test.js:8,67), not as a call.

    So no consistent webcalendar.db.backup is ever written into {{ fs.app_data }}, and the 03:00 rclone sync still picks up the live webcalendar.db / -wal / -shm triplet exactly as the issue describes.

    2. The test still has no teeth. Run on its own at 86ff8d1:

    $ NODE_ENV=test node --test server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js
    # tests 3   # pass 3   # fail 0

    I broke the fix three ways, same as last time, and got the same results:

    1. Replaced the body of Db.createBackup with a bare fs.copyFileSync(dbPath, targetPath) — no checkpoint, no VACUUM INTO. That is the reported defect pasted back into the function meant to fix it. 3/3 pass, still green.
    2. Removed the checkpoint — swapped PRAGMA wal_checkpoint(${normalizedMode}) at server/db.js:2728 for PRAGMA user_version, so no WAL work happens at all. 3/3 pass, still green. The row.busy ?? 0 / row.log ?? 0 defaulting at server/db.js:2730-2733 turns the missing columns into zeroes, so assert.strictEqual(result.busy, 0, ...) (issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:48) cannot distinguish a successful checkpoint from one that never ran.
    3. Deleted Db.quiesceDatabase outright — 3/3 fail. Existence is the only thing the suite detects.

    Reproduction re-run against 86ff8d1

    Scratch scripts under /tmp, nothing written into the clone. ~19 MB WAL database holding a constant 60000 rows, a second process committing UPDATE batches with wal_autocheckpoint = 64 and busy_timeout = 30000, then a chunked read of the main file (~1.85 s, as rclone streams a large file) followed by -wal and -shm at later instants.

    Round 1 — today's backup path. Writer confirmed live (max(n) rising 8600 → 14600 over one second):

    seeded live db bytes= 18960384
    round 1 live copy (1839ms, wal 824032->1602712B): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 2 live copy (1850ms, wal 1602712->1602712B): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 2469 cell 1: Rowid 31983 out of order  rows=60000
    round 3 live copy (1855ms, wal 1602712->1602712B): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 3395 cell 4: Rowid 43998 out of order  rows=60000
    round 4 live copy (1846ms, wal 1602712->1602712B): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 3906 cell 379: invalid page number 4630 rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 5 live copy (1845ms, wal 1602712->1602712B): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 4647: btreeInitPage() returns error code 11 rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 6 live copy (1855ms, wal 1602712->1602712B): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 4748: btreeInitPage() returns error code 11 rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000
    CORRUPT 5/6

    5/6 restores fail PRAGMA integrity_check; three are unreadable outright. The source holds integrity=ok rows=60000 throughout, so the damage is in the copy, not the data. An earlier pass with a shorter 350 ms read window hit 1/3 and then 0/6 — the failure is probabilistic, gated on whether a checkpoint rewrites already-read pages during the copy window, which is why a single green restore proves nothing here.

    Round 2 — the real Db.createBackup under the identical load, via DATABASE_PATH pointed at the seeded database so the shipped function runs:

    round 1 Db.createBackup (fallback=false, 19292160 bytes): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 2 Db.createBackup (fallback=false, 19292160 bytes): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 3 Db.createBackup (fallback=false, 19292160 bytes): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000

    Still correct, still the part of d4213fb worth keeping. It just needs a caller.

    Round 3 — the real Db.quiesceDatabase('TRUNCATE') immediately before the copy, i.e. the best case if the shard backup cron were taught to call the one endpoint that shipped:

    round 1 quiesce({"busy":1,"log":-1,"checkpointed":-1}) then rclone-style copy (1862ms): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 2 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (1863ms): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 3 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (1847ms): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 4 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (1859ms): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 5 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (1851ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 4719: btreeInitPage() returns error code 11  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 6 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (1856ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 4305 cell 258: invalid page number 4744  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 7 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (1853ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 4822: btreeInitPage() returns error code 11  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 8 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (1856ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 5058: btreeInitPage() returns error code 11  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000
    CORRUPT 4/8

    4/8 corrupt. A point-in-time checkpoint buys nothing when the copy takes seconds and the writer never stops. Round 1 of that run also recorded busy:1, log:-1 — the checkpoint was itself blocked by the writer and did nothing, and the route at server/index.js:449-454 returns success: true for that case anyway.

    What would close this

    Unchanged from my last comment:

    • A caller for Db.createBackup that lands a consistent webcalendar.db.backup inside {{ fs.app_data }} on a schedule preceding the 03:00 rclone sync, and ideally an exclude for the live webcalendar.db* triplet so the torn copy is not in the backup set at all.

Round 1 above is a working template: it goes red against today's backup path and green against Db.createBackup, which is exactly the discrimination the current test lacks.

    Secondary item from the issue body

    The busy_timeout table in the issue body is still out of date, and partly in the project's favour: server/db.js:76 is 30000 ms, and sync-worker/sync_worker.py:94,485 open with timeout=30.0 plus an explicit PRAGMA busy_timeout = 30000 at :96,487. The Radicale plugins (radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:47, radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:16,40) still pass no timeout, i.e. Python's 5 s default rather than 0 — the correction #132 made. None of it is on the backup path, so none of it affects the conclusion.

    Working tree restored after every break; git status --porcelain is empty at 86ff8d1a07db362585d30c1f0bf69fb68d84bf0a.

    Still live on origin/master @ 026c459. Not closing.

    The commit cited above, dc05830 ("feat: autonomous vacation homework progress update"), is an ancestor of 026c459, and it does touch both server/db.js and server/index.js — but not on the backup path. Its server/db.js hunk replaces validateEncryptionKey/resolveEncryptionKey and adds isWeakEncryptionKey; its server/index.js hunk adds validateSystemSyncSecret and a boot-time call. That is issue #82 secrets work. Both hunks sit in the first ~110 lines of server/db.js / the first ~60 of server/index.js; the quiesce/backup block starts at server/db.js:2783.

    Nothing has changed for this issue since my 2026-10-01 comment

    Against 86ff8d1, the commit I reviewed then, the backup code is byte-identical — git show 86ff8d1:server/db.js sliced from quiesceDatabase to checkHealth diffs clean against the same slice at 026c459, and the route slice diffs clean too. git diff 86ff8d1 026c459 -- server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js is empty. The functions have only moved:

    • server/db.js:2783 — Db.quiesceDatabase(mode), PRAGMA wal_checkpoint(<mode>) at server/db.js:2790.
    • server/db.js:2801 — Db.createBackup(targetPath), VACUUM INTO at server/db.js:2812.
    • server/db.js:2828 — Db.verifyDatabaseIntegrity(targetPath).
    • server/index.js:507 — POST /internal/db/quiesce, which calls quiesceDatabase and nothing else.

    The two things that would close this are still absent

    1. Db.createBackup still has no production caller. Whole repo, excluding node_modules:

    $ grep -rn "createBackup\|quiesceDatabase\|verifyDatabaseIntegrity" \
        --include=*.js --include=*.py --include=*.json --include=*.toml \
        --include=*.yml --include=*.sh --include=Dockerfile --include=justfile . | grep -v node_modules
    server/index.js:510:    const result = await Db.quiesceDatabase(mode);
    server/db.js:2783:  quiesceDatabase(mode = 'TRUNCATE') {
    server/db.js:2801:  async createBackup(targetPath) {
    server/db.js:2805:    const quiesceResult = await this.quiesceDatabase('TRUNCATE');
    server/db.js:2828:  verifyDatabaseIntegrity(targetPath = dbPath) {
    server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:43   (+ :44,:45,:46,:53,:58,:59,:60,:66 — test lines elided)

    Definition, the quiesce route, and the test. No other caller. There is still no scheduler — grep -rn "setInterval\|node-cron\|cron\.\|schedule(" server/*.js server/routes/*.js server/utils/*.js returns exactly one hit, server/utils/webcalSubscription.js:161, the webcal poll timer. grep -inE "backup|quiesce" over docker-compose.yml, Dockerfile, justfile and package.json returns nothing. The string backup appears in four files repo-wide (scratchpad.md, server/db.js, server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js, server/test/issue137_encryption_key_restore.test.js), and in the last only as prose and a fixture.

    So no consistent webcalendar.db.backup is ever written into {{ fs.app_data }}, and the 03:00 rclone sync still picks up the live webcalendar.db / -wal / -shm triplet exactly as this issue describes.

    2. The shipped test still has no teeth. Run on its own at 026c459:

    $ NODE_ENV=test node --test server/test/issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js
    # tests 3   # pass 3   # fail 0

    I broke the fix three ways in the working tree:

    1. Replaced the body of Db.createBackup with a bare fs.copyFileSync(dbPath, targetPath) — no checkpoint, no VACUUM INTO. That is the reported defect pasted back into the function meant to fix it. 3/3 pass, still green.
    2. Removed the checkpoint — swapped PRAGMA wal_checkpoint(${normalizedMode}) (server/db.js:2790) for PRAGMA user_version, so no WAL work happens at all. 3/3 pass, still green. The row.busy ?? 0 / row.log ?? 0 defaulting at server/db.js:2793-2794 turns the missing columns into zeroes, so assert.strictEqual(result.busy, 0, ...) (issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:50) and body.details.busy, 0 (:84) cannot tell a successful checkpoint from one that never ran.
    3. Deleted Db.quiesceDatabase outright — 3/3 fail. Existence remains the only thing the suite detects.

    The integrity_check assertion at issue120_wal_quiesce_backup.test.js:67 does not save it: the test backs up an idle test database, so a raw copy passes too, as break 1 shows.

    Reproduction re-run against 026c459

    Scratch scripts under /tmp, nothing written into the clone. ~20 MB WAL database holding a constant 60000 rows, wal_autocheckpoint = 64, busy_timeout = 30000; a second process committing batches of 400 INSERT + DELETE pairs so page structure actually churns (splits, cell moves, freelist turnover) while the row count stays invariant; then a chunked read of the main file, a 500 ms gap, then -wal and -shm, as rclone walks the three files at three instants. Writer confirmed live (max(id) 70000 → 73600 over one second, count(*) constant at 60000).

    One methodology note, since it changes what counts as evidence here: my first pass used an UPDATE-only writer with fixed-length values, as earlier rounds on this issue did, and got 0/6 corrupt across read windows from 1.3 s to 8 s and across all three copy orderings (main-first, wal-first, sidecars excluded) — even though the main file's content was verifiably changing under checkpoints throughout. Fixed-length updates leave the b-tree shape alone, so a mixture of page versions still verifies. The failure needs structural churn. A single green restore on this issue proves nothing; a green restore from an UPDATE-only load proves less than nothing.

    Round 1 — today's backup path.

    round 1 live copy (main read 5763ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9095 cell 340: Rowid 704392 out of order rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 2 live copy (main read 5777ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9095 cell 128: Child page depth differs rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 3 live copy (main read 5794ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9095 cell 365: Rowid 746781 out of order rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    round 4 live copy (main read 5803ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9095 cell 410: Rowid 762868 out of order rows=43535
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000
    CORRUPT 4/4

    4/4 restores fail PRAGMA integrity_check; three are unreadable outright, and the one that opens is short by 16465 rows. The source holds integrity=ok rows=60000 throughout, so the damage is in the copy, not the data. An earlier 6-round run under the same load was also 6/6.

    Round 2 — the real Db.createBackup under the identical load, via DATABASE_PATH pointed at the seeded database so the shipped function runs:

    round 1 Db.createBackup (386ms, fallback=false, 37400576 bytes, quiesce={"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 2 Db.createBackup (293ms, fallback=false, 37298176 bytes, quiesce={"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 3 Db.createBackup (232ms, fallback=false, 37195776 bytes, quiesce={"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    round 4 Db.createBackup (289ms, fallback=false, 37400576 bytes, quiesce={"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}): integrity=ok  rows=60000
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000

    4/4 correct, VACUUM INTO path, no fallback. This is still the part of d4213fb worth keeping. It just needs a caller.

    Round 3 — the real Db.quiesceDatabase('TRUNCATE') immediately before the copy, i.e. the best case if the shard backup cron were taught to call the one endpoint that shipped:

    ROUND 1 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (2914ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9102 cell 316: Rowid 799595 out of order  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    ROUND 2 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (2960ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9102 cell 376: Rowid 811195 out of order  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    ROUND 3 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (2971ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9102 cell 307: Rowid 820791 out of order  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    ROUND 4 quiesce({"busy":0,"log":0,"checkpointed":0}) then rclone-style copy (2891ms): integrity=*** in database main *** | Tree 2 page 9102 cell 376: Rowid 831196 out of order  rows=ERR SQLITE_CORRUPT: database disk image is malformed
    live source: integrity=ok rows=60000
    CORRUPT 4/4

    4/4 corrupt, all four unreadable. A point-in-time checkpoint buys nothing when the copy takes seconds and the writer never stops — and the route at server/index.js:507-512 returns success: true regardless, including for a checkpoint that reported busy.

    What would close this

    Unchanged:

    • A caller for Db.createBackup that lands a consistent webcalendar.db.backup inside {{ fs.app_data }} on a schedule preceding the 03:00 rclone sync, and ideally an exclude for the live webcalendar.db* triplet so the torn copy is not in the backup set at all.
    • A test that writes concurrently — with structural churn, not fixed-length UPDATEs — while the backup is taken, and asserts integrity_check and a row count on the restored file. Rounds 1 and 2 above are a working template: 4/4 red against today's backup path, 4/4 green against Db.createBackup, which is exactly the discrimination the current test lacks.

    Secondary item from the issue body

    The busy_timeout table in the issue body is still out of date, re-checked at this commit: server/db.js:138 is PRAGMA busy_timeout = 30000, and sync-worker/sync_worker.py:94,516 open with timeout=30.0 plus an explicit PRAGMA busy_timeout = 30000 at :96,518. The Radicale plugins (radicale/radicale_custom_auth.py:16,40, radicale/radicale_custom_rights.py:47) still pass no timeout, i.e. Python's 5 s default rather than 0 — the correction #132 made. None of this is on the backup path, so none of it affects the conclusion.

    Working tree restored after every break; git status --porcelain is empty at 026c4598ec549a354e74995c734a943e37bda5d2.

    Automated attempt stopped without a change: Agent reported blocked: The fix (a consistent webcalendar.db.backup snapshot via VACUUM INTO plus integrity check, no copy fallback, a quiesce check that fails when the checkpoint returns nothing, 409 on a blocked checkpoint) passes its own tests 4/4. The 26 e2e failures all come from two stray calendars ('E2E 345 ticked/unticked 1791983389577') under the test user on the shared Radicale at localhost:5232, apparently left by another worktree's #345 run; no spec in this checkout creates them. A human must delete those calendars or reset Radicale's storage, then re-run Playwright.

    Fixed: PR #431 squash-merged into main on the driver's local gates (GitHub CI not used) (one commit; git revert it to undo).

    • Suites: lint: 1 passed, 0 failed | node: 1768 passed, 0 failed | python: 104 passed, 0 failed | e2e: 76 passed, 0 failed
    • Declared tests fail without the production change and pass with it (output in the PR).
