MEDIUM: the stylesheet and the markup have drifted — seven undefined custom properties, twelve unstyled classes, ~90 dead lines #110

Closed

Description

@ClaydeCode

Severity: MEDIUM. Class: broken.

What breaks

The stylesheet and the markup have drifted apart in three directions: CSS that references custom properties which do not exist, markup that uses classes the CSS does not define, and CSS for markup that no longer exists. Roughly 90 of 1842 lines in app.css are dead.

Where and what

Seven undefined custom properties, in use at 14 sites. Verified against the live computed style of :root — all resolve to the empty string: --bg-canvas, --text-main, --text-muted, --surface-hover, --surface-bg-alt, --radius-card, --warning. Sites: public/css/app.css:767, 829, 1406, 1423, 1472, 1481, 1543, 1610, 1612, 1633, 1714, 1727, 1743, 1747; public/index.html:173, 635, 638; public/js/app.js:905, 933.

Measured effects where no fallback is supplied — the declaration becomes invalid at computed-value time and falls back to unset:

UNDEF_EFFECT {"dropdownBg":"rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)","shareItemBg":"rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)","oauthColor":"rgb(29, 58, 69)"}
  • .autocomplete-dropdown (:829) has no background. It is position:absolute over the share dialog's content, so user-search suggestions render as text stacked on top of whatever is beneath — a legibility defect on a real flow.
  • .share-user-item (:767) renders transparent instead of a tinted row.
  • .btn-oauth (:1406), .sidebar-settings-btn (:1472) and .modal-divider (:1423) intended --text-main/--text-muted; the colour inherits, so the "muted" divider label and the welcome modal's two paragraphs render at full --ink weight — flattening the type hierarchy in the opposite direction to what was intended.
  • index.html:173 sets style="background: var(--surface-hover)" on "Neue Aufgabe" to differentiate it from "Neuer Termin"; undefined → transparent → the two buttons are identical.

The correct names all exist in the token layer already: --surface, --ink, --ink-muted, --bg, --radius-tile.

Twelve classes used in markup with no CSS behind them. modal-footer (1 use), empty-state (3), flex-1 (4), btn-secondary (2), toast-icon/toast-msg/toast-close, popover-color-bar/popover-meta/popover-actions, attendee-status (3), kanban-card-body, sidebar-task-info/sidebar-task-meta/sidebar-tasks-empty, recur-icon/google-badge-icon/btn-msgraph/all-day. Two are visible defects:

  • The event popover never shows the event's colour. public/js/app.js:1228 renders <div class="popover-color-bar" style="background:${color}">, but the class has no CSS, so the div is zero height — measured bar: {w: 246, h: 0}. Meanwhile app.css §17 defines .popover-color-dot, .popover-header, .popover-close and .popover-footer, none of which the renderer ever emits: the CSS and the JS were written against different markup.
  • .modal-footer measures display: block, padding: 0px, border-top: 0px, so even where the task modal's button row fits it sits flush against the modal's left edge with no separator. (The row's larger problem is filed separately.)

Also: showToast(…, 'warning') at public/js/app.js:631 — .toast.warning is not defined (only success, error, info) and the icon map has no warning key, so the toast silently renders as an info toast with no left border colour.

Dead CSS from a previous markup generation. app.css:1253–1316 is an explicitly labelled compatibility block for classes the current index.html no longer uses (.sidebar-title, .calendar-list-section, .account-list-section, .view-switcher, .view-btn, .search-bar, .btn-new-event, .toolbar-left, .toolbar-right, .label-icon, .search-btn, .month-grid-header-day), all with zero references. Add .app-header (3 rules — the deadness there is load-bearing and is filed separately), the four unused popover classes above, and .sr-only at :1147. .onboarding-card/-header/-logo/-title/-subtitle are each defined twice (:137–155 and :1229–1250) with different values, so the first block is dead; .sidebar is defined twice (:164 and :1443), and the second block sits after the mobile media query, so any positional property added to it silently breaks the off-canvas drawer.

How to reproduce

Counted with grep across index.html and public/js/*.js versus app.css, and confirmed by reading computed styles in a real DOM (the UNDEF_EFFECT and popover measurements above).

Why it matters

Two user-visible defects today (the invisible autocomplete dropdown, the invisible popover colour bar) plus a flattened type hierarchy in the welcome dialog. More importantly, this is why other defects slip through: in a file with this much dead CSS, a dead selector looks normal — which is exactly how the mobile toolbar's .app-header rules survived.

Fix direction: rename the seven properties to the tokens that exist, add or remove the twelve classes, delete the compatibility block and the duplicated rule pairs, and add a warning variant to the toast styles and icon map.

    Partially fixed on origin/master @ 5a92edd. Not closing.

    Credit where it is due first, because a real part of this landed.

    All seven custom properties are settled. --surface-hover, --surface-bg-alt, --text-muted, --warning and --radius-card are defined in both themes (public/css/app.css:12, :13, :19, :24, :42, and the dark block at :69, :70, :76, :81), and --bg-canvas / --text-main no longer appear anywhere under public/. .popover-color-bar has a real height: 4px at public/css/app.css:2092, so the popover colour bar renders. .modal-footer, .btn-secondary, .toast-icon, .toast-msg, .toast-close, .popover-meta and .popover-actions all have rules now. Most of the compatibility block is gone: .view-switcher, .view-btn, .search-bar, .btn-new-event, .toolbar-left, .toolbar-right, .label-icon, .search-btn, .app-header, .popover-header, .popover-close, .popover-footer and .popover-color-dot are all absent.

    What is still live on origin/master:

    1. The toast warning variant (UI-19) is untouched. public/js/app.js:805 still calls showToast('Bitte wähle eine/n Nutzer*in oder eine E-Mail-Adresse.', 'warning'). The icon map at public/js/app.js:2052 is still { success: '✓', error: '✕', info: 'ℹ' }. public/css/app.css:1090-1092 still defines only .toast.success, .toast.error and .toast.info. The warning toast in the share flow still falls back to the info glyph and renders with no left border colour; this is the defect exactly as filed.

    2. Eleven of the twelve classes are still unstyled. flex-1 (public/index.html:656), empty-state (public/index.html:983), attendee-status (public/js/eventModal.js:501), kanban-card-body, sidebar-task-info, sidebar-task-meta, sidebar-tasks-empty, recur-icon, google-badge-icon, btn-msgraph, all-day. grep -c over app.css returns 0 for every one of them; only btn-secondary and the popover/toast set above were added.

    3. Dead selectors remain. .sidebar-title at public/css/app.css:1313 and .calendar-list-section / .account-list-section at :1316-1317, all three with zero references in index.html or public/js/.

    4. The .sidebar duplicate is still there, public/css/app.css:155 and public/css/app.css:1461, the second one still sitting after the mobile media query at :1111. A NOTE comment at :1459 now warns not to set position in the later rule; that documents the trap rather than removing it.

    5. One new undefined property. public/index.html:807 uses var(--primary) as an SVG stroke and --primary is defined nowhere in the token layer. Same class of defect as the original seven, introduced since the report.

    On the test. server/test/issue110_stylesheet_markup_drift.test.js passes 3/3, but it cannot fail if the behaviour comes back; it only greps the source text. I set .popover-color-bar { height: 0px } in the working tree, reintroducing the exact measured h: 0 defect from the report, and the suite stayed 3/3 green. Test 1 also builds a usedVars set (test file lines 33 to 36) and then never asserts against it, checking a hardcoded list instead; that is why var(--primary) slips past a test titled "All referenced custom CSS properties are defined in app.css". That hardcoded list also drops two of the seven this issue names (--bg-canvas, --text-main) and adds two it never named (--radius-sm, --text).

    Working tree restored; git status --porcelain is empty.

    Re-runnable:

    git fetch origin
    git grep -n "^\.toast\." origin/master -- public/css/app.css
    git show origin/master:public/js/app.js | sed -n '805p;2052p'
    git grep -n -e "flex-1" -e "attendee-status" origin/master -- public/css/app.css   # no output
    git grep -n "var(--primary)" origin/master -- public/

    Partly fixed on origin/master @ 86ff8d1. Not closing.

    Checked against the five points I left open in my previous comment on 5a92edd. All five are still live, verbatim, and I found one more dead selector from the issue body that I had not named.

    What moved since 5a92edd: public/css/app.css changed in exactly two places, both drawer-visibility work unrelated to this issue — visibility: hidden / transition delay added to the mobile .sidebar inside the media query (public/css/app.css:1117-1121) and to .sidebar-settings-drawer (public/css/app.css:1515-1526). git diff 5a92edd 86ff8d1 -- public/css/app.css is those two hunks and nothing else. server/test/issue110_stylesheet_markup_drift.test.js is byte-identical to 5a92edd.

    What stays fixed, and should: .modal-footer has a real flex rule with a separator (public/css/app.css:1035). .popover-color-bar still has height: 4px (public/css/app.css:2096). The .onboarding-card / -logo / -title duplicate pair is down to one block (public/css/app.css:1289, :1297, :1304). .sr-only is no longer dead — public/index.html references it twice. Five of the seven named custom properties are defined in both themes.

    Still live

    1. The toast warning variant (UI-19) is still untouched. public/js/app.js:1028 passes 'warning'; the icon map at public/js/app.js:2277 is still { success: '✓', error: '✕', info: 'ℹ' }; public/css/app.css:1090-1092 still defines only .toast.success, .toast.error, .toast.info. Driving the real icon map and the real CSS from the sources at 86ff8d1:

    $ node /tmp/repro110.js
    showToast call site     : 1028
    icon map literal        : { success: '✓', error: '✕', info: 'ℹ' }
    icons["warning"]        : undefined
    glyph actually rendered : "ℹ" <-- falls back to the info glyph
    .toast.* variants in CSS: success, error, info
    .toast.warning rule : NONE -> no left border colour
    rendered icon span      : <span class="toast-icon">ℹ</span>

    That is the defect exactly as filed: the share-flow warning renders as an info toast with no left border colour.

    2. Eleven of the twelve classes are still unstyled. grep -c over public/css/app.css returns 0 for flex-1, empty-state, attendee-status, kanban-card-body, sidebar-task-info, sidebar-task-meta, sidebar-tasks-empty, recur-icon, google-badge-icon, btn-msgraph. All ten are emitted (public/index.html:669 for flex-1; public/js/eventModal.js for attendee-status; public/js/tasks.js for the kanban and sidebar-task set; public/js/calendar.js for recur-icon; public/js/app.js for google-badge-icon; public/index.html:743 for btn-msgraph; empty-state in index.html plus four JS modules). The eleventh, all-day, is emitted as a chip modifier at public/js/calendar.js:300 — the only all-day hit in the stylesheet is the unrelated container .all-day-events at public/css/app.css:561, so the modifier still has no rule.

    3. Dead selectors remain, and there is one more than I reported. .sidebar-title (public/css/app.css:1314) and .calendar-list-section / .account-list-section (public/css/app.css:1317-1318) still have zero references under public/. Adding to that: .month-grid-header-day (public/css/app.css:1122) is named in this issue's compatibility-block list and grep -rn "month-grid-header" public/ returns that one stylesheet line and nothing else — the only reference is the rule itself.

    4. The .sidebar duplicate is still there. public/css/app.css:155 and public/css/app.css:1462, the second still sitting after the mobile media query at public/css/app.css:1111. The NOTE at public/css/app.css:1460-1461 warns against setting position in the later rule; that documents the trap instead of removing it, and the rule now also carries overflow: hidden !important (public/css/app.css:1466), which overrides across the media query by the same mechanism the NOTE is about.

    5. The undefined property introduced since the report is still undefined. public/index.html:871 uses stroke="var(--primary)"; grep -rn -- "--primary\s*:" public/ returns nothing.

    Test

    NODE_ENV=test node --test server/test/issue110_stylesheet_markup_drift.test.js → 3 pass, 0 fail.

    I broke it twice.

    Break A — a defect the test does catch. Renamed both --surface-hover definitions (public/css/app.css:12, :69) out of existence. Test 1 went red:

    not ok 1 - All referenced custom CSS properties are defined in app.css
        Missing custom property definitions in CSS: --surface-hover
    # tests 3 / # pass 2 / # fail 1

    So the test has teeth for the five tokens in its hardcoded list.

    Break B — the issue's own headline defect, which the test does not catch. Restored, then put .autocomplete-dropdown back on the undefined token exactly as filed — public/css/app.css:869 from background: var(--surface) to background: var(--bg-canvas). That is the UNDEF_EFFECT {"dropdownBg":"rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)"} measurement in the report, the invisible user-search dropdown over the share dialog. Suite stayed 3 pass, 0 fail.

    The reason is still the one I described last time and it has not been touched: test 1 builds a usedVars set from every var(--…) under public/ (test file lines 33-36) and then never asserts against it, checking a hardcoded list instead. That list drops two of the seven properties this issue names, --bg-canvas and --text-main, which is why Break B is invisible and why var(--primary) at public/index.html:871 slips past a test titled "All referenced custom CSS properties are defined in app.css". Likewise, test 2's requiredClasses names none of the eleven classes in point 2 above, and test 3's deadSelectors names none of the four selectors in point 3 — so the suite is green on 86ff8d1 while every one of those is live. A test that cannot fail on the defect it is named after does not certify the fix.

    Working tree restored; git status --porcelain is empty.

    Partly fixed on origin/master @ 026c459. Not closing.

    Nothing about this issue moved since my last check on 86ff8d1. public/css/app.css is byte-identical — git diff --stat 86ff8d1 026c459 -- public/css/app.css is empty. The eight commits in between touch public/booking.html, index.html, js/app.js, js/dialogFocus.js, js/eventModal.js, js/invitations.js, js/notifications.js and js/tasks.js, and their subjects name issues #87, #88, #89, #91 and #96. server/test/issue110_stylesheet_markup_drift.test.js is byte-identical too.

    What stays fixed, and should: --surface-hover, --surface-bg-alt, --text-muted and --warning are defined in both themes (public/css/app.css:12, :13, :19, :24 and :69, :70, :76, :81); --radius-card at :42. --bg-canvas and --text-main have zero var() uses left anywhere under public/. .popover-color-bar still has a real height: 4px (public/css/app.css:2096-2097), and .modal-footer still has its rule (public/css/app.css:1035).

    All five points I left open on 86ff8d1 are still live, verbatim.

    Still live

    1. The toast warning variant (UI-19). public/js/app.js:1028 passes 'warning'; the icon map at public/js/app.js:2344 is still { success: '✓', error: '✕', info: 'ℹ' } and the render expression at :2346 is icons[type] || icons.info; public/css/app.css:1090-1092 defines only .toast.success, .toast.error, .toast.info. Driving the real icon map and the real stylesheet from the sources at 026c459:

    $ node /tmp/repro110.js
    showToast call site     : 1028
    icon map literal        : { success: '✓', error: '✕', info: 'ℹ' }
    icons["warning"]        : undefined
    glyph actually rendered : "ℹ" <-- falls back to the info glyph
    .toast.* variants in CSS: success, error, info
    .toast.warning rule : NONE -> no left border colour
    rendered icon span      : <span class="toast-icon">ℹ</span>

    The share-flow warning still renders as an info toast with no left border colour — the defect exactly as filed.

    2. Eleven of the twelve classes are still unstyled. grep -c over public/css/app.css returns 0 for all ten of flex-1, empty-state, attendee-status, kanban-card-body, sidebar-task-info, sidebar-task-meta, sidebar-tasks-empty, recur-icon, google-badge-icon, btn-msgraph, and all ten are still emitted — public/index.html:677 (flex-1), public/index.html:751 (btn-msgraph), public/booking.html:113 (empty-state), public/js/eventModal.js:513 (attendee-status), public/js/tasks.js:409, :652, :669, :671 (the kanban and sidebar-task set), public/js/calendar.js:298 (recur-icon), public/js/app.js:618 (google-badge-icon). The eleventh, all-day, is emitted as a chip modifier at public/js/calendar.js:300; the only all-day hit in the stylesheet is the unrelated container .all-day-events at public/css/app.css:561, so the modifier still has no rule.

    3. Four dead selectors remain. .sidebar-title (public/css/app.css:1314), .calendar-list-section / .account-list-section (:1317-1318) and .month-grid-header-day (:1122) — all four named in this issue's compatibility-block list, and all four with zero references anywhere under public/ outside the rule itself.

    4. The .sidebar duplicate is still there. public/css/app.css:155 and public/css/app.css:1462, the second still sitting after the mobile media query at public/css/app.css:1111.

    5. The undefined property introduced since the report is still undefined. public/index.html:879 uses stroke="var(--primary)"; grep -rn -- "--primary\s*:" public/ returns nothing.

    Test

    NODE_ENV=test node --test server/test/issue110_stylesheet_markup_drift.test.js → 3 pass, 0 fail.

    I broke it twice.

    Break A — a defect the test does catch. Renamed both --surface-hover definitions (public/css/app.css:12, :69) out of existence. Test 1 went red:

    Missing custom property definitions in CSS: --surface-hover
    not ok 1 - Issue #110 — Stylesheet and Markup Drift Fixes
    # tests 3 / # pass 2 / # fail 1

    So the test has teeth for the five tokens in its hardcoded list.

    Break B — the issue's headline defect, which the test does not catch. Restored, then put .autocomplete-dropdown back on the undefined token exactly as filed — public/css/app.css:869 from background: var(--surface) to background: var(--bg-canvas), confirmed applied by git diff --stat (1 insertion, 1 deletion). That is the UNDEF_EFFECT {"dropdownBg":"rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)"} measurement in the report, the invisible user-search dropdown over the share dialog. --bg-canvas is defined nowhere (grep -rn -- "--bg-canvas\s*:" public/ → 0 hits). Suite stayed 3 pass, 0 fail.

    The cause is unchanged, because the test file is unchanged: test 1 builds a usedVars set from every var(--…) under public/ (test file lines 33-36) and then never asserts against it, checking a hardcoded targetUndefinedVars list instead. That list drops two of the seven properties this issue names, --bg-canvas and --text-main, and adds two it never named, --radius-sm and --text — which is why Break B is invisible and why var(--primary) at public/index.html:879 slips past a test titled "All referenced custom CSS properties are defined in app.css". Likewise test 2's requiredClasses (test file lines 58-72) names none of the eleven classes in point 2, and test 3's deadSelectors (lines 79-89) names none of the four selectors in point 3. So the suite is green on 026c459 while every one of those is live.

    A green suite here is not evidence about this issue: the three assertions check a hardcoded list of names that no longer overlaps the defects still open, and the one file this issue is about has not been edited since the last time I reported that.

I made playwright.config.js use a per-checkout E2E database (the shared /tmp one was encrypted with a different key, so the server refused to start), which got the server starting. The shared Radicale user 'test' still holds leftover calendars 'E2E 345 ticked/unticked 1791983389577', most likely from an issue-345 run, which make most of calendar.spec.js fail, including both #110 tests; a human must remove them or reset Radicale storage before the gates can pass.

    Fixed: PR #427 squash-merged into main on the driver's local gates (GitHub CI not used) (one commit; git revert it to undo).

    • Suites: lint: 1 passed, 0 failed | node: 1767 passed, 0 failed | python: 104 passed, 0 failed | e2e: 68 passed, 0 failed
    • Declared tests fail without the production change and pass with it (output in the PR).
