tryboot flag not cleared

Issuing a reboot command with a tryboot partition doesn't seem to clear the tryboot flag before attempting to boot from said partition.

system is setup for secure boot with following partition layout

mmcblk0p1
    - autoboot.txt
mmcblk0p2
    - boot.img
    - boot.sig
    - config.txt
mmcblk0p3
    - boot.img
    - boot.sig
    - config.txt
mmcblk0p4.. rootfs and other partitions

For this example, partition 50 was used, but any partition without a valid boot.img exhibits the same behavior.

Example

sudo reboot "50 tryboot" # should fail with partition 50 since it does not exist

Expected behavior
Expect it to try booting from partition 50 once, then boot normally, in my case using partition 3 from autoboot.txt

Actual behavior
Continuously attempts to boot sd partition 50, (along with other boot modes specified in the bootorder, ie network) until power is removed.
Note : I am aware bootorder 0x6 is invalid for this board, but don't think it should effect this issue.

tryboot is cleared before starting the boot order but you would either need to remove power, set MAX_RESTARTS or use BOOT_WATCHDOG to abort the current boot

Could you elaborate on what exactly is cleared before starting the boot order.

From the logs, I notice the line [timestamp] TRYBOOT_A_B_MODE being output repeatedly until the watchdog finally times out.

If the tryboot flag is being cleared, what is causing TRYBOOT_A_B_MODE and partition 50 to be continuously attempted ?

Is it possible that a non-zero partition number in the PM_RSTS register is triggering this ?
Does the watchdog timer expiring clear the partition bits in PM_RSTS ?

If the above is true, is the tryboot flag only used to filter the [TRYBOOT] section in config.txt/autoboot.txt ?

I think what @timg236 means is that the hardware flag indicating that you have requested a tryboot is cleared before any of the boot methods are tried, so there's no way that a reboot would accidentally end up trybooting again. However, those chosen boot methods are then retried until it boots (or doesn't, in your case). The watchdog is the correct way out of the loop, at which point it will boot normally because the tryboot flag has been cleared.
