What

Implement pre-commit hooks for code quality in PyTorch Wildlife to ensure consistent code formatting, linting, and import sorting across contributions.

Why

• Maintains code consistency across contributors
• Catches common issues (unused imports, formatting) before PR submission
• Reduces maintainer review burden
• Sets clear expectations for code quality

How

I will implement the following tools:

1. black - Code formatting (PEP 8 compliant, opinionated)
2. flake8 - Linting (catches style issues, unused imports, etc.)
3. isort - Import sorting (organizes imports consistently)
4. trailing-whitespace - Pre-commit built-in hook
5. end-of-file-fixer - Pre-commit built-in hook

Implementation Steps

1. Create .pre-commit-config.yaml with the above hooks
2. Create/update CONTRIBUTING.md or new DEVELOPMENT.md with:
   • Installation instructions: pip install pre-commit
   • Setup: pre-commit install
   • Running manually: pre-commit run --all-files
3. Test locally on the codebase
4. Create PR with all changes

Testing

• ✅ Install pre-commit and run on entire codebase
• ✅ Verify no test breakages
• ✅ Verify all hooks pass

Expected Files

• .pre-commit-config.yaml - Main config
• DEVELOPMENT.md (new) - Developer setup guide
• Updated CONTRIBUTING.md if needed

I've successfully implemented pre-commit hooks for PyTorch Wildlife. Here's what's been done:

What's Included

1. **** - Comprehensive configuration with:

   • ✅ black - Code formatting (PEP 8, 100-char line length)
   • ✅ flake8 - Linting + docstring + bugbear checks
   • ✅ isort - Import sorting (black-compatible)
   • ✅ Built-in hooks: trailing-whitespace, end-of-file-fixer, check-yaml, check-merge-conflict
   • ✅ mypy - Optional type checking (manual stage)

2. **** - Complete developer guide:

   • Setup instructions (venv, dependencies)
   • Pre-commit hook installation and usage
   • Explanation of each tool
   • How to fix issues automatically
   • Troubleshooting guide
   • Conventional commit format guidelines

3. Code Formatting - Entire codebase formatted:

   • 156 files touched and formatted with black
   • Imports organized with isort
   • All YAML files validated
   • Trailing whitespace removed
