grbltouch on RP2040 RP23U5XBB

Hello, I am trying to use grbltouch with a RP2040 RP23U5XBB board and I have gotten some parts to work but am having problems and I have not seen a lot of info on what I am seeing. I get a good connection via Ethernet and I can Jog all the axis but it looks like there is a mismatch between MPOS and WPOS as the zeroing is working but not on the displayed coordinate system? Also it seems most of the MDI entries I make are never attempted? I would expect them to be seen in the text box next to the MDI buttons? Some commands I see and some I don't. I have tried all but grbl id + settings firmware and it seemed like the grbl id (1) seemed to work the best but still not correct. It seems like I am just missing a setting but I have tried all the combinations I could think of in the $10 area. Do have any insight into what I might be missing? or is there some inherent incompatibility with this board?

Hi Mike,

I am using Teensy4.1 based customised board which I use in my machines. I use ethernet with websockets connection. For my controller, the UI works perfectly fine. Actually I use it in all my machines and I don’t need any other software for machine operating purpose. I haven’t tested this UI on other boards as I don’t have them but I can suggest you so see some points if you are willing to troubleshoot on your own.

1. Unzip the file index.html.gz which will give you index.html which is editable so you can make quick changes to it and see its result.
2. Put index.html file in root of SD card of your board (best way to do this is to use any ftp client software like FileZilla). I am sure you should have SD enabled as you are using webUI.
3. Index.html hosted from SD card will take priority even if you have index.html.gz in littles.
4. I have purposely not shown some of the outputs to the console text box near MDI buttons. If you want to enable all the responses from controller, add a line like this after following line (should be around line number 2071):
   function onMessage(evt) {
   console.log(evt.data); //this line is to be added
5. This will give you all messages output on browser console. If you are using chrome, open chrome developer tools>console to read all messages. You can see that every 150ms a report is given by grblHAL, the data of which then rearranged to different divs of webUI.
6. If you are willing to dive little deeper, you can select which messages to show on UI console. You can add line like:
   writeConsole(evt.data);
   writeConsole function is written to display the corresponding data to UI console which is at right side of MDI buttons.
7. I hope I have been clear explaining stuff to you.

Thank you for the detailed response, it has help me make some modifications to the file and those modification have improved the compatibility with my setup. Viewing the response helped with debug. I attached a quick attempt that has a couple things that helped. I have to test it more on a machine vs just a connected board but the dro is working better. I will update you with how that goes.

I am happy that you got more progress. I have seen your file and you did the changes at right place. I hope you now will be able to make which messages to show on UI console and which to show on browser console. Any functional issue you can ask here.

Everything fine? I forgot to mention you to keep grblHAL compatibility setting to 0 means pure grblHAL. This might change how report is generated from controller level.

Hello Ravi, Things are good. I have a work in progress that I am still working on. I have not tested on a machine yet, just on a board and PC on the bench, but from what I can tell it works as expected now. Hoping to do a machine test soon. I did a lot of work moving things around to suit my machine better. Most of that is cosmetic stuff. I also added a couple of things like a stop button and made the response area hideable or visible with a button. When I first had issues I experimented with the firmware and had luck with grbl id (1) but along with other changes that were actually probably what fixed it. I did go back and change the firmware back to grblhal and it still works although there is an uncomfortably long delay when first connecting before the dro updates for the fist time. After that it seems fine. I also believe I have a version that still looks just like your version that should work also. I will have to test that though.

For connection delay, I recommend using static ip for controller as well as LAN connected PC. I use static ip and it connects very fast. There are $ settings to configure those ip settings. I would like to see a screenshot of how your modified ui looks. I also recommend to read general readme as well as one major upgrade readme of grblTouch so that you can use all the features like keyboard shortcuts as well as easy work zero (calculator interface when clicking on work coordinate, etc.

I inserted 2 clips. I was not connected to a controller so the DRO numbers are not visible. They are on the left. WPos is shown in large numbers and Mpos is shown in smaller number under them when they are shown. AND I just noticed the axis zero buttons are missing.... :( I will have to add them back in.... Oh and I am working on using a HB04 usb pendant as a hid interface and mapping to keyboard input. It works on windows well. Working on a linux version as that ultimately is what I will need.

Thank you for reminding me about the Manual IP. When I moved over to the linux machine I missed that. Now that it is set to manual it is much better. I also have the a background python script working on linux that is translating the pendant to keystrokes and it works good.

Hi Ravi, I attached them this time hopefully that works. I did fix the missing zero and move to zero buttons but they are not shown on these images. I also started testing on a machine and it worked good. Still a few things. Unfortunately moving between my machine and where I can program is more time consuming so I don't get as many iterations as I can when I do it from the bench, so changes will be slower in the making now. I did get the pendant working but I think for that to work well I will need to hand pick increments. The current standard ones are either too coarse or too fine. That should be easy to do.

Ok. Now I can see it. You have made lots of UI changes that means you are good at css. I hope that will work as expected. If you want to use this UI in small touchscreens, I highly recommend to put buttons farther from each other. There are chances of false touch and you might be in trouble.
