Merging 8.0 release branch into master

Hi folks. I feel I'm finally ready for the leap: merging the 8.0 release branch (a.k.a. PR #914 or start-8) into mainline development. Expect a new release candidate soon, this time built from master. It seems like a good way to kick off the new year.

It's done. The 8.0 code is now in master.

Yes! I'd recommend doing that from time to time anyway, especially until I get the full 8.0 release done.

I think you need to make git talk to the server before it'll notice that it's behind.

The safe thing to do is git pull --ff-only (again terrible UI design). That updates your branch with the latest from upstream without risking accidentally committing the wrong thing.

Which is a risk if you forget the --ff-only because, and I may not have mentioned this, git has terrible UI design.
