How to Use

Reading the Report

Open DUPLICATE_BUGS_REPORT.md to see:

  • Executive summary of findings
  • Detailed analysis of each duplicate bug
  • Priority assessments and recommendations
  • Insights on duplicate patterns

Regenerating the Report

To regenerate the report with updated data:

python3 generate_duplicate_report.py

This will create a new DUPLICATE_BUGS_REPORT.md file.

Updating the Analysis

To include more duplicate issues:

  1. Use GitHub API or MCP tools to search for issues with state_reason: duplicate
  2. Analyze comments to find the original issue reference
  3. Update the data structures in generate_duplicate_report.py
  4. Run the script to regenerate the report

Methodology

The analysis was conducted by:

  1. Searching for all closed issues with state_reason: duplicate
  2. Analyzing comments to identify the original issue each duplicate references
  3. Collecting detailed information about each original issue
  4. Ranking issues by number of duplicates, reactions, and community engagement

Key Insights

  • Regression issues receive more duplicate reports than long-standing bugs
  • Input/autofill regression in Runtime 134.x was the most duplicated issue
  • Even closed issues continue to receive duplicate reports when users encounter the same problem
  • Issues with 91 comments show extensive community investigation

Recommendations

Based on this analysis, we recommend:

  1. Improve issue discoverability - Help users find existing issues before creating duplicates
  2. Document common errors - Create troubleshooting guides for frequent issues
  3. Pin critical issues - Make high-duplicate issues more visible
  4. Track regression patterns - Monitor which versions generate the most duplicates
  5. Template responses - Standardize how duplicates are handled

Future Enhancements

Potential improvements to this analysis:

  • Analyze issues over longer time periods with pagination
  • Check for unmarked duplicates using text similarity
  • Track which WebView2 versions have the most bug reports
  • Monitor duplicate patterns to identify systemic quality issues
  • Create automated duplicate detection before issue submission
