OPH interpretation and working terms

This reference distinguishes the proposed physical interpretation from the objects and hypotheses of a particular theorem or executable model. The basis states the closure hypothesis, the no-outside rule, the agreement condition and the executable specification, the premise reference is the source for A1–A3, and the agreement research foundations map the established mathematical results used in model construction.

One structure, two descriptions

OPH proposes that one complete structure is both a timeless solution of a self-reference condition and a world that computes itself. Its proposed realization is literal: observers reverse-engineer their reality's substrate and construct hardware within it whose actual execution realizes that same history, including its builders and executing hardware. Construction and execution occur in emergent, mutually calibrated local times. No external computer or additional time in which the whole history is played is supplied by this hypothesis.

The realization requires a specified map between the hardware's actual execution and the represented history. Matching one actual history, preserving a declared family of preparation and intervention responses, and encoding every independently allowed microscopic state are different contracts. A passive replay of one trajectory does not establish the stronger intervention-faithful contract; this does not by itself reject an actual-history-only hypothesis. Each candidate must state its comparison, observable scope and error budget.

The universe-level equation T(U)=U concerns a complete history and its structural closure. This notation is schematic: a candidate must specify the history domain and the action of T. It permits changing local states within that history. An actual record history or quantum process need not assign simultaneous outcomes to every incompatible, unperformed measurement. Complete history does not mean a noncontextual table of counterfactual classical outcomes. Existence, uniqueness and physical realization of such a universe remain hypotheses to investigate. The equation alone proves neither a final instantaneous cosmic state nor that every mathematical fixed point is a world. See Essay B, §§6–7 and 9 and the flagship's closure hypothesis.

Internal construction and execution

The live observer implementation constructs finite read, retained-record and feedback functions. Its binary electromagnetic detector uses P as an accepted closure input and makes the detector outcome control the next native repair. Apparatus and protocol are legitimate design choices in this construction; self-consistency need not select one unique device. Executable finite observer functions are therefore an achieved component, while a physical realization containing the builders has the broader contract below.

The builders' inference, device construction, program and data initialization, controls, memory, read/write and record services, and clock comparisons must be operations available within the candidate history. Its realization map must account for their information access, execution delay and resources. Specifying a decoder does not implement one, and initial data cannot conceal unaccounted access to the desired answer. A mathematical correspondence also needs an explicit physical identification with the history containing the builders and device. These are open realization obligations, not new conclusions of A1–A3 or the finite source models.

Wolpert's self-simulation lemma, Lemma 2 in Section 4 is a relevant conditional possibility result. It assumes the Physical Church–Turing thesis (deterministic computable universe dynamics) and the pristine reverse Physical Church–Turing thesis. For a fixed requested finite model-time horizon it supplies an initial computer program whose computation returns the whole-system state at that horizon, including the computer; the program can depend on the horizon and execution can finish later in model time. The model allows arbitrarily extendible memory. It does not show that observers can prepare the required initial state, that a finite device has sufficient resources, or that the simulated and executing worlds are physically identical. Nor does one program for each requested horizon establish one execution realizing a whole ongoing history. The result therefore neither completes OPH's construction nor supports a blanket impossibility claim about internal self-simulation.

Proposed primitives and emergent physics

The proposed primitive objects are patches with local states, records, interfaces and admissible operations. As theorem premises, A1 names a particular mathematical carrier and incidence structure, A2 constrains shared operational meaning, and A3 selects a state within its declared feasible set. Those supplied structures and every further theorem premise must be counted.

Physical spatial position, metric geometry, durations, fields and matter are intended to be readouts of a common realization. This is the programme's emergent-physics thesis. It does not mean every current construction derives those objects from the proposed primitives. A supplied graph, Euclidean field domain, Lorentz chart, matter representation, action, layer time or control clock is an explicit premise of that construction. A successful calculation on such a background remains a conditional result until its source and physical interpretation are supplied.

Observer measurements and operational objectivity

The construction target is an executable realization of OPH's observer algebra whose shared measurement statistics reproduce the observable physics of our Universe. Those statistics must admit the appropriate effective descriptions: a nontrivial quantum field theory in three spatial and one temporal dimension, including the observed interactions, and classical physics and gravity in their coarse-scale regimes. These are intended physical success criteria, not conclusions obtained from the observer algebra or current code.

Observations are primary; fields and spacetime are effective descriptions. In this interpretation, the physical content of the represented universe is the observations made by observers and their compatible operational meanings. Particles, fields, positions, durations and metrics describe regularities in those observations. The construction is not required to produce a fundamental QFT, manifold or metric first, or to establish that those descriptions exist independently underneath the observers' records. Internal state vectors, graphs and coordinate arrays can be implementation representations without being a fundamental spacetime ontology.

The acceptance test is observational: over a stated domain, a shared interpretation of the executable observer's joint statistics and intervention responses must agree, within controlled errors, with the effective physical description and independent measurements. Refinement may make the errors vanish for a declared limiting description. Coarse-grained classical and gravitational descriptions have their own validity regimes and corrections; they need not become exact descriptions at every scale. Using a supplied field equation as a benchmark remains legitimate, but does not by itself show that its observational content follows from the constructed observer.

Meaning assignment is operational: it identifies which preparations, interventions, measured quantities and recorded events different observers are describing. Inter-observer consensus and repair must make those interpretations compatible on shared observations, including joint and conditional probabilities and correlations. The interpretation maps must respect accessible operations and records, survive refinement, and be fixed independently of the observations used to validate a prediction. Agreement on labels or a reinterpretation chosen after seeing an answer is insufficient.

Within this proposal, objective reality is the stable operational structure shared by compatible observer perspectives: quantities, records and responses that remain consistent under the specified comparisons and interventions. Agreement does not require independent stochastic experiments to produce identical outcomes. It also does not assign predetermined classical values to incompatible measurements that were not performed. This states OPH's operational interpretation of objectivity; it does not establish a metaphysical claim that agreement alone creates or determines the physical world.

“Exactly the measurements of nature” names the ideal limiting target: matching the observable probability laws and their conditional responses, with controlled finite approximations. Experimental support is necessarily within declared calibration and statistical uncertainties and cannot certify unlimited precision from finitely many records. Consensus and mathematical consistency alone do not imply that this target is attained. The separate actual-history self-realization hypothesis above retains its own contract.

Where an effective vacuum-sector mass gap is defined, the target allows a nonnegative gap, including zero for gapless sectors. It does not demand a strictly positive gap for every field or a global energy operator on arbitrary curved spacetimes. The required stability, spectrum and spacetime domains must be stated in each result. These are properties of the effective description of observations, not additional fundamental objects to install in the source. A free-field benchmark is a component of the target; the observations associated with interactions and dynamical gravity remain obligations.

The construction completion criteria make this target reviewable. Apparatus and protocol design choices are legitimate; proving unique selection of a design is not required. A chosen construction has to satisfy its continuum and empirical contracts.

Why observations come first

Informally, OPH starts with what observers can experience operationally: detector outcomes, clock readings, retained records and the consequences of their interventions. They compare those records and repair incompatible interpretations. A successful shared description lets each observer predict how further observations will relate to the records they can access.

In that description, a field summarizes how detectors respond to specified preparations. Spacetime geometry summarizes relationships among observations such as clock comparisons, signal exchanges and trajectories. Classical physics describes the regularities accessible at suitable coarse scales. Within OPH these are effective ways observers describe their experienced world, with limited domains of validity. They are not additional fundamental entities that the implementation must construct behind the observations.

For example, a geometric description earns its role by correctly relating observers' clock and signal records. The model need not contain a fundamental spacetime object for those relations to have that description. Conversely, putting a metric array into a simulation does not establish that observers can observe its proposed geometric meaning. The comparison must follow through to their accessible records and predictions.

That is why the completion test concerns experiences represented by measurements and their agreed operational meanings. Those meanings must predict the correlations and intervention responses observers actually find. The claim that OPH achieves this for nature requires the construction and evidence specified above; the interpretation alone supplies no verdict.

Terms with different mathematical roles

Term Meaning and boundary
Patch A bounded local system with specified state, access boundary, records and operations. A graph vertex is a model representation; adjacency alone does not establish physical distance or causality.
Operational observer A system or connected federation with the declared readback, record, feedback, prediction and continuation interfaces. Conscious experience is not part of this mathematical definition.
Conscious observer An additional psychophysical interpretation or empirically supported instantiation of an operational system. Accessible records alone do not prove consciousness.
Meaning The declared operational interpretation of data: probabilities, intervention effects and record values. It is not automatically Shannon information, subjective significance or an ethical ordering.
Compatibility Independently specified agreement of the relevant restrictions or records. Its definition depends on whether the objects are assignments, relations, probabilities, operators or quantum states.
Repair residual A discrepancy measured for a declared update or constraint. Zero update residual need not imply semantic compatibility; that correspondence requires proof.
Repair fixed point A state R(x)=x of one declared map, on a specified full or reduced state space. It does not imply that hidden states, records or all other observables stop changing.
Public normal form A terminal state or quotient record for a declared repair relation. Termination ensures every repair sequence ends; confluence gives the same endpoint from the same initial state. Identifying normal forms with independently specified compatible states requires an additional soundness/completeness correspondence. Uniqueness from one initial state differs from uniqueness across histories or boundary data.
Stationary distribution A probability law preserved by an evolution. Individual realizations can continue to change.
Complete-history closure A consistency or self-reference condition on an entire history. Its fixedness is distinct from fixedness of an instantaneous state or record.
Legitimate regime An independently specified set preserved by the admitted dynamics. Recovery can enter a regime with continuing motion. Stability, convergence and termination are separate properties.

Relational support compatibility, existence of a global assignment, exact global extension of every local relation, and existence of a probability extension are different tests. A classical counterfactual joint distribution is also a different object from a quantum state with contextual measurements. The extension and lattice examples make those distinctions explicit.

Six uses of time

Quantity What it supplies
Host wall time Runtime and resource cost of an implementation.
Solver/update counter Position in a chosen search or execution schedule, including any rejected attempts or stutters.
Causal order or logical numbering Precedence relations, such as authenticated read-from dependence; numbers respecting them add no physical duration. Physical causal identification is a separate map.
Model coordinate or lapse A parameter used by a declared equation, chart, action or discretization. A shared layer parameter can be a legitimate restricted-model premise.
Modular parameter The dimensionless parameter of an algebra-state pair's modular automorphisms. The geometric cap interpretation has its own branch hypotheses.
Operational clock or proper time Observer-accessible readings tied to the model's observable evolution, with calibrated duration and, where claimed, a worldline/proper-time realization.

Conversions between these quantities need explicit maps and error assumptions. The target is compatible local clock readings and comparisons, without a preferred universal clock, universal simultaneity or identical rates for all observers. A common calibration within one experiment is legitimate. The scalar action clock supplies whole-layer durations in one benchmark; the count clock reconstructs proper-time ratios under its order/count-limit and ancestry premises. Experienced succession is a further interpretation, not a consequence of a modular-flow or convergence theorem.

Evidence and reuse

Self-stabilizing recovery, confluence and fixed sheaf diffusion provide established tools with different hypotheses. Use the theorem mappings before asserting a new convergence result. None selects a microscopic physical law just by sharing its equilibria. Learning interfaces or changing a coarse description requires checking the original meaning and preserved observables again.

An exact finite theorem establishes its mathematical conclusion under its premises. A numerical check supplies bounded evidence about the tested model. An interpretation identifies what that model is proposed to describe. Physical support requires independently discriminating observations with calibration, uncertainty and alternatives accounted for. OPH does not have one common model established as physically correct.

Current summaries use these distinctions. Dated registrations, vendored sources and hash-bound receipts retain their historical content; their current scientific interpretation belongs in maintained guides and explicit errata. Generated registers are refreshed from their source records.
